CITY OF EVERETT CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES November 12, 2019 – 5 pm Everett Municipal Building, 2930 Wetmore Avenue, 10th floor Acceptance of October Minutes: Motion to approve: Seconded: All in Favor Commissioners Present: Cat Snapp, Deb Fox, Kati Nickerson, Diane Wright, Elizabeth Person, Kristen Keenan, Terra Patterson Commissioners Absent: Maren Oates, Rosemary Jones, Hugh Denny (temporary leave of absence), Jason Grim, Cheryl Davis Guests: Jason Quicksilver, David Lotz, Gary Council Liaison: Staff: Carol Thomas, Tyler Chism Mark your calendar: Cultural Arts Commission Grants Due- Friday, November 22 Wintertide- Thursday, Dec. 5 Cultural Arts Commission Meeting, Tuesday, December 10, review grants Wendt & Mayor’s Arts Awards- Thursday, February 13 Mayor Franklin opened the meeting with a conversation about the Mayor’s Arts Awards and the City of Everett’s values. Review 20 Nominations for the Wendt & Mayor’s Arts Awards. Commissioners discussed the applicants with an emphasis on the duration of the contribution to Everett’s Cultural life. Commissioners selected the following for the 2019 Wendt and Mayor’s Arts Awards: Steve and Carol Klein, Wendt Award The Kleins have been involved in our community for many years. Their impact reaches deep within the cultural organizations that make Everett such a great place to live and raise your family. They have supported the capital campaigns for Imagine Children’s Museum, Schack Art Center and Village Theatre. They have recently accepted the Board Chair position for the Providence Hospital capital campaign for building a trauma unit. Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens, Creative Placemaking 56 years All volunteer organization dedicated to creating an outdoor sculpture park in a beautiful, arboretum setting. The organization raises funds to purchase sculptures and also works to create and maintain the gardens with the help and support of Everett’s Parks Department. Wendy Poischbeg, Catalyst for Artists 20+ years Wendy has been a great supporter and connector of artists in Everett and the greater Snohomish Community. “Wendy feels the pulose of established arts and has a keen intuition for new, innovative artists, makers, performers, and WOMEN entrepreneurs” Carie Collver, Legacy of Honor 28 years Gallery Director of the Schack Art Center for over 28 years, curating over 200 exhibitions and working with thousands of artists. She has brought the rock stars of the arts world to Everett including Chuck Close and Dale Chihuly. Richard Porter, Author and Storyteller 8+ years Richard has a knack for finding the esoteric stories about Everett and is the author of two books about Everett history, Smokestackers and Spar Tree. Everett Civic Music Association, Organization Making A Difference 89 years ECMA is an all-volunteer organization, bringing quality entertainment to Everett for 89 seasons. ECMA hosts internationally renowned performers at the Civic Auditorium – the largest venue in Everett with a capacity of over 1,500. Season tickets for 7 performances are just $55 and they offer student season tickets for just $22. This is very accessible: for adults, the price per show is just $7.00 and for students, the price per show is $3. Cultural Commission Grants- furthering the mission of cultural diversity, equity and inclusion. Grant review committee to review grants before bringing to the entire commission.
