September 20, 2016 Minutes – 2016 Senior Center Advisory Board Attendees: Board Members Tad Kasuya Mae Macy Barb Lester Ray Trichler Bob Macy Lynne Worley Excused Members Sue Johnson Laura Burton Guests Tony Porciuncula- Council on Aging Liaison City Staff Lori Cummings- Parks, Recreation & Community Svcs. Dept Director Deb Loughrey-Johnson- Senior Center Director CALL TO ORDER Vice Chairperson Lynne Worley called the meeting to order, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. CALL FOR CORRESPONDENCE None APPROVAL OF THE April 19 and June 21, 2016 BOARD MINUTES Motion made to approve the minutes, passed unanimously. REPORTS Member Sharing Bob Macy thanked the Senior Center for letting them host a lot of the activities. He commented that it was nice to have everyone meeting new people and interact through different activities. Lynne announced that October 1st is the Alzheimer’s walk around the water down in Everett. The walk starts at 8:30 am. Tony shared that the COA health aging committee is having a forum on 10/20 from 9-12 which will discuss “why can’t you eat like a 20 year old”, brought some fliers. Also, the council is looking for new members to be on the board. Can apply online if interested. The Council on Aging is co-sponsoring the candidates forum on aging to be held at the CGSC. Ray Trichler commented that the senior center looks good after the remodeling. Lori Cummings shared that the Mayor’s office is looking for people to be part of a new Vision Committee. They are looking for a diverse group of people to contribute. There was a vision plan done about 6 years ago and it is time to revamp. 1 Carl Gipson Senior Center | Recorded by: LHarrison  September 20, 2016 Minutes – 2016 Senior Center Advisory Board  This is also the time of year when new members are sought for various advisory boards as some positions are ending their term. Deb Project and Program Highlights:  The Age Wave forum will be held at the center in the MPR on Tuesday 9/27. She mentioned that board members are welcome to bring busloads of their seniors to the forum. Pie and coffee will be provided.  Saturday Dances going well. Brookdale agreed to bring the food again next year and the entertainer agreed to stay on as well. The dance chair Liz is looking for another person to take over to run the dances.  OctoberFeast has a conflict with the Alzheimer’s walk this year. It was never the intention to conflict with the walk and will be sure to check on timing for next year. Octoberfeast proceeds go to the USO Dance Friday November 11th.  Deb explained the plans for the new Security camera system which will be in by Mid-October.  Deb announced that she has decided to retire, with her last day on October 28th . Board members expressed their appreciation for all that she has done for the center and are sad to see her go. They asked who would be taking over. Lori mentioned that they are hoping by the end of the month to have a plan for the transition.  Construction status- some outstanding details, took care of the tripping hazards. Deb mentioned that we might do some carpet squares to that it’s easier to repair.Tad cautioned that this can be an issue with walkers (tripping hazards) at Washington Oakes. GUEST PRESENTATION- LISA HARRISON Lisa Harrison reviewed the newsletter plans and shared a draft with the board. She then shared results from a recent survey conducted at Snohomish County Senior Centers. The Carl Gipson Senior Center scored very strong, especially with respect to socialization and health & wellness.  Tad mentioned that the success is due in big part to Deb’s leadership. Lisa mentioned that there are opportunities for volunteers at various events and directed attention to the sign- up sheets. Deb mentioned it would be nice to have name tags for the advisory board members. She added that it would be nice to have the advisory board members greeting at the Fireman’s and Police dinners.  Lori asked if the fireman’s and police dinners need to be publicized more and Deb agreed that would be a good idea to announce them on social media as attendance appears to be waning. Deb also mentioned that for the USO dance they should let us know how many tickets they need for their residents so that we can set them aside. 2 Carl Gipson Senior Center | Recorded by: LHarrison  September 20, 2016 Minutes – 2016 Senior Center Advisory Board NEW BUSINESS  Toni announced that the Stilly director is retiring so they are looking for a replacement.  The October Mayor’s Coffee Hour will be held at the Carl Gipson Senior Center on Wednesday, October 26th from 10 – 11 AM. ADJOURNMENT Motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. The meeting adjourned 8:58 a.m. The next Advisory Board Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18th at 8 am.
