January 17, 2017 Minutes – 2017 Senior Center Advisory Board Attendees: Board Members Sue Johnson Bob Macy Tad Kasuya Ray Trichler Barb Lester Lynne Worley Excused Members Laura Burton Barb Maier Guests Tony Porciunula, COA Liaison Judy Touhy, City Council Liaison City Staff Bob Dvorak, Senior Center Director Lisa Harrison, Administrative Assistant CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Sue Johnson called the meeting to order, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. CALL FOR CORRESPONDENCE None APPROVAL OF THE DECEMBER, 2016 BOARD MINUTES Moved and seconded to accept the minutes from last meeting with the change of meeting end time from 10 to 9 am. Motion passed unanimously. REPORTS Member sharing: 3-5 minutes per board member (i.e. news, observations, etc.): Judy Touhy introduced herself as the new city council liaison. She explained that she works at the Schack Arts center and sees lots of opportunities for collaboration with the Senior Center. Judy Mentioned that on January 18 the Mayor is giving the “state of the city” address. Sue Johnson: Welcomed Judy and thanked her for her service to the Senior Center. She commented that the decorations for the Valentine’s Day theme look very good and that her neighbor just joined and played table tennis. Tad Kasuya: Washington Oakes business is good, had a nice New Year’s Eve party and had an event with the mascot from the Seahawks along with some Hawks alumni. Tony Porciunula: January 25th the Council of Aging is having their first meeting and 10 new members have been added (will have 30 members). The Center for Healthy Living has released new rules based on some past infractions. He mentioned that there was some investigation into one of the groups because the leader received some money to send her home to see her sick mother and they are not 1 Carl Gipson Senior Center | Recorded by: LHarrison  January 17, 2017 Minutes – 2017 Senior Center Advisory Board supposed to take money. The center is also no longer allowing senior association meetings. Tony and his group of Filipino Seniors have asked for them to review this decision. Gambling and betting is also prohibited for card games. Lynne Worley: mentioned that they are trying hard to keep the flu from the residents where she works. Barb Lester: asked if there is a service that helps the seniors with taxes. We have since learned that AARP is offering tax services to seniors at the Everett Public Library. Appointments begin on February 1st. Sue Johnson: asked if there will be any guidance for seniors if ObamaCare gets repealed. Bob mentioned SHIBA as one resource (Statewide Health Insurance Benefit Advisors). Bob Dvorak Senior Center Report:  The staff has purchased new blue senior center mugs in an effort to have standard sizes at the coffee bar.  Talked about the Project Committee- next Saturday (January 21) is Everybody’s Closet and volunteers are lined up.  Still working on the Newsletter to get mailed to people versus picking it up at the center. Looking for the funding to be able to mail bulk. o Doing a postcard first to confirm mailing addresses. o Looking into inserting an 8-page insert for upcoming Parks & Rec guides in order to get more exposure to all city residents. o Planning to include a questionnaire to get input from seniors that do not attend regularly.  The new advisory board member approved by the mayor has changed his mind so we are looking for a new member. Bob asked the board to provide recommendations, perhaps with business or finance experience. Upcoming Events  Dances: Bob said that the staff is exploring altering the hours the center is open on Saturdays so that we can have longer dances (i.e. 1-4 pm).  Bob mentioned that staff is reviewing all contracts and updating through December 31st, 2017. o He and Eric are in communication with an acupuncturist for possible addition to health services offered by the Center, looking to start at $15. It would be starting in the spring along with some additional exercise classes.  Mystery trips scheduled for January and February. Sue Johnson suggested considering a Boeing tour.  A member asked about the Bob Overstreet memorial, will the city do something in his honor? Per Judy Touhy, yes, but it may take time to decide exactly what to do.  Sue Johnson asked to see the budget summary and how the money is allocated. She mentioned that the Human Needs committee in Everett has $300,000 for grants and seniors are a priority for them. 2 Carl Gipson Senior Center | Recorded by: LHarrison  January 17, 2017 Minutes – 2017 Senior Center Advisory Board o Bob mentioned the County Grants that are given to the non-profit organizations. We receive $23,000. In order to receive the grant, the county is requiring all senior centers to address Opioid awareness training. Will receive guidelines January 31st. o Judy mentioned that we should contact the Snohomish Health District who has done a lot of presentations in this area.  Ray commented that our nurses are great and go around and have conversations with people in order to see how they are doing, take blood pressure etc. Bob mentioned that the nurses and the staff are good about knowing the people and able to recognize changes and issues with people. NEW BUSINESS Sue would like to have someone talk to them about the Opiate issue once we get the guidelines end of month.
