Architectural Advisory Board Council Chambers July 9, 2014 Meeting called to order 7:54 p.m. 1. Roll Call: Mrs. Friedlander, Mr. Fritsch, Mr. Anderson, and Mr. Way were present. 2. Petitions: There were no petitions. 3. Consent Calendar: There were no items for discussion. 4. Other Business: The board reviewed a proposal for the design scheme of planned bus shelters in various locations around the city. The board favored the green roof and white structure, but would mention that the input was based on very vague color schemes. In future, the board would respectfully request a more complete proposal to include material samples, accurate color samples, and other similar city structures for context in decision making. 5. Old Business: There was no old business. 6. New Business: a. Variance application V1562-14 by David Smith of 444 Spectrum, LLC, to permit the placement of more than 3 tenant names on the freestanding sign on premises known as 444 West Broad Street, RPC #51-133-100 of the Falls Church Real Property Records, zoned B-1 limited business, said property owned by 444 Spectrum, LLC. The board reviewed and discussed with city staff and the applicant the current freestanding sign and the proposal to add additional blades to the existing structure. In consideration of the location of retail establishments away from Broad Street and their need for visibility at the property’s main entrance, Mr. Way made a motion that the Board recommend approval of the variance for a total of seven retail entity blade signs and one building identification blade sign. The board also recommends the applicant address ground treatment around the plaza-side base of the sign to conform with ADA and other safety-related code requirements as it relates to clearances around the sign. The motion was seconded by Mr. Anderson and unanimously approved. b. Referral from City Council to Boards and Commissions for comment regarding the proposed issuance of a Request for Proposals to develop the property at 366 North Washington Street (Miller House). The Board reviewed the proposal and discussed with city staff. In consideration of the size and layout of the property, the board questioned the feasibility or possibility of a structure that could have the function proposed while taking into consideration parking, ADA requirements, and health service vehicle access. The Board recommends  consideration of other possible uses for the property and will submit any ideas we may have to city staff. 7. Minutes: Minutes from the June 4, 2014 AAB meeting were reviewed. Mr. Way made a motion to approve as submitted. The motion was seconded by Mr. Anderson and unanimously approved. 8. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 PM.
