Architectural Advisory Board Council Chambers April 5, 2017 – 7:30 p.m. 1. Roll Call: Roll was called at 7:39 p.m. Mr. Fritsch, Ms. Duggan, Mr. Wong and Mr. Anderson were present. Ms. Friedlander joined at 7:45 pm. 2. Petitions: John Ward of the city’s Environmental Sustainability Council provided information about the upcoming Solarize Falls Church campaign run by the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) in partnership with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) and the City of Falls Church. There were no other petitions. 3. Consent Calendar: There were no consent calendar items. 4. Old Business: There was no old business. 5. New Business: a. The board reviewed conceptual design AAB #20170220 by Butz-Wilbern Architects & The Young Group, for constructing multi-building cottage home development, 1010 Railroad Avenue, T-52102100. After a presentation by Jack Wilbern of Butz-Wilbern, the board posed questions about parking and landscaping elements and recommended additional lighting at either end of the project because of site’s seclusion. The board expressed overall enthusiasm for the design’s innovation and attention to details such as level of variation in the facades of the different house models, the treatment of walkways and railings throughout the site, and the palette selected. Board members also commented favorably on the suitability of the site for what would be the first development of its kind in Falls Church. 6. Other Business: a. Leadership transition. Mr. Fritsch announced his decision to step down from the board at the end of his current term, concluding more than a decade of service as a member and chairman. He was warmly thanked Harry E. City of Falls Church Architectural Identity. The board discussed staff comments on the draft Architectural Identity information sheet which is intended to help developers relate their building designs to the context of local history, culture and values. It was agreed to supplement the one-page document with a list of books and other resources describing local history, culture and values. The board also supported the staff’s recommendation that the document be included with other handouts that staff provide to developers at pre- meetings, so that local architectural identity can be considered early in the process. 7. Minutes: A motion by Mr. Anderson to accept the January 4, 2017 meeting minutes seconded by Ms. Duggan and unanimously approved. 8. Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:56 p.m. Harry E.
