Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church Meeting
November 17, 2016
Falls Church Cherry Hill Farm House
Minutes / Notes
Members Present: Barb Cram, Laura Hull, Midge Wang, Isabella Flory (Student Rep)
Officials Present: Corey Jannicelli, Ingram Racine,
Also Present: Keith Thurston (non-voting TLCC Foundation), Lucy Lieberman
The meeting was held at the Historic Cherry Hill Farm House because the Dogwood Room at
City Hall was needed for another activity and there were no other conference spaces the
appropriate size available. The meeting was called to order with a quorum present by Chair
Barb Cram at 9:40 am. The minutes were reviewed and accepted.
Update on Grants within the City
An update was provided on the status of the grant applications. A staff report is being written
and they will be before the City Council for consideration in December. Both the project
grants and operational grants were competitive with more in grant requests amounts were
received than the total grant funds available. So many should expect less than fully funded
amounts if they are funded.
Reports on Strategic Planning - Funding Sustainability
Laura Hull provided a very thorough perspective on the issues of long term funding. Some
corporations have funding for the arts that can be accessed. Family Foundations are another
category of funding and each has it specific requirements. Private Foundations are a good
source, but the bar for qualification is very high from the view point of a small local
organization.
Banner Program
There has been an issue noticed that commercial banners on lamp poles have appeared at the
Lincoln Properties then for competition on the Pearson that are similar to the City authorized
banners for non-profits and City events. The question is have these been approved under the
sign ordinance by the City?
Announcements
The City will have an event to light the Holiday Lights downtown on November 28 in the early
evening. The Washington Sinfonietta will hold its Christmas Spectacular on Sunday
December 11 at the FCh Episcopal. The Creative Cauldron is presenting “A Christmas Carol
Memory” through December 20. The Christmas Tree viewing and auction of decorated
Christmas Trees from non-profits will occur on Sunday December 4, at the Hilton Garden Inn.
The DataArts Survey AEP5 is due on November 24 for those that have not responded yet.
Expect to see more additions to the Tinner Hill Historic Site.
