Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church Meeting January 19, 2016 Dogwood Room City Hall Minutes / Notes Members Present: Barb Cram, Nikki Henderson, Ellen Gross, Ron Anzalone, Isabella Flora, Sallie Cole, Lindy Hockenberry Officials Present: Corey Jannicelli, Ingram Racine, Mary McMahon, Letty Hardy Also Present: Keith Thurston (non-voting TLCC Foundation), The meeting was called to order by Chair Barb Cram at 9:40 am. Logo Use A discussion was held on the use of the AHC and TLLC Foundation logos. Those receiving grants from the Foundation process should include the Foundation logo materials supporting the events that benefit from the grants. VCA Grant Updates Corey Jannicelli attended the VCA session held in Arlington, found it very informative and provide an update to the group. She indicated that VCA general operational grants can be up to 10% maximum of the organizational operating budget. For project grants, they are looking for new and innovative things and are from $1K to $7,500 and are on 1-to1 matching basis with the locality. Organizational and assistance grants are generally $1,000. Touring Artist is a new category, and they will support up to 50% of the artist fee and the Virginia artist must travel a minimum of 30 miles for the event. They want to add additional artist to that list. They also provide grants for artist in education. Grant Resources Corey and others mentioned that the Foundation Center in DC has a very good listing of grant resources. There are also grants from the Virginia Department of Historic and Architectural Resources. Cottage Housing A review of the pending new zoning category for Cottage Housing was made. Comments were collected for submission. Through general concerns of the unknown, it was suggested that the zoning go in as pilot program so that lessons can be learn before the second applications are received. Joint Communications The buzz is larger when the various activities in the City are coordinated for joint marketing and communications. Ellen Gross last month distributed the Falls Church News Press advertising calendar to provide a concept of the yearly planning. All agreed it was a good direction. Announcements  Nikki Henderson was congratulated on a very successful MLK Day event and march the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation organized. 1   The Kensington is looking for artist and entertainers. They will have music every day. Andrew Acosta will be performing there regularly. They are opening in February.  Tree lighting, Barb announced there are many that want year around lighting in the trees of the downtown area. There will be a discussion with the Council EDC today.  Barb Cram was congratulated for a very successful Watch Night- the 19th year.  There is a meeting with the Mason Row developer on January 27.  Rare Bird Coffees is hosting the works of student artists.  Public Works (Kim Callahan) is brain storming the art and appearance of the planned downtown plaza.  Mary McMahon announced there is a new database in the library to store and access photos, videos and oral histories that will be ready for use this year.  Nikki Henderson announce the THHF is hosting a bus trip to the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture on February 12 that includes access tickets (no parking issues).  Barb received positive feedback on the chalk mural that was pit up for Watch Night.  The Lincoln at Tinner Hill was supposed to have an inside interpretation for local history – and it has not been provided.
