Arts and Humanities Council of Falls Church Meeting June 18, 2020 Art Room, Falls Church Community Center Minutes Members Present: Corey Jannicelli, Rosemary Ziskind, Letty Hardi, Marybeth Connelly, Ed Henderson, Ron Anzalone, Sally Cole, Ellen Gross, Chrystie Swiney, Laura Hull, Guests: Keith Thurston (CATCH Foundation), Shaina Schaffer (Planner, DDS), James Snyder (Director, DDS) Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Laura Hull at 9:36 am. Recognition and Remembrance of Chair, Barb Cram:  The Arts and Humanities Council lost our Chair and friend on June 2nd. Members of the A&H Council shared appreciation and personal memories.  Brief summary includes: o Barb’s upbeat, joyful attitude, cheerful demeanor, ability to listen o Her ability to turn ideas into action o Service to the community through Watch Night, A&H Council, FCA, Plien Air Festival, Public Art Policy, Tri-centennial Committee, Transit Plaza History Panel and more o The group supports honoring her memory in some way, working with Keith Thurston and Barb Crams family. Suggestions included a Barb Cram Positivity Award. Receipt of Public Comments  No comments were received Minutes: No minutes were presented for review New Business:  UVA Student Public Art Policy  Project Background o This project came about thanks to Barb Cram and the City is putting the study forward for recognition by the American Planning Association o The document includes a Public Art Vision to include a commitment to Community, Arts as Contributors, Storytelling and Equity. o The document also includes values and goals, makes the case for supporting public art, stakeholders and site analysis with a Falls Church Arts & Cultural Map plus a list of current and potential sites, extensive case study examples, recommendations for next steps and a proposed public art policy.  A&H Council Member Feedback o Overall good work 1  o Add Tinner Hill Making History Visible project document to the addendum and make sure the project is incorporated into the overall document o Recommended addition of Education in Art and Art in the Schools o Review historical markers and historic site list with the Historical Commission so that nothing is left out. o Make sure that the Visual Arts and Performing Arts are acknowledged as a vital part of our City’s Arts & Cultural plans o More clarity needed on maintenance of Public Art and a plan for associated costs. o Recommendations needed by Arts & Humanities Council to City Council on a Maintenances and Project budget for Public Art o School Board should also be informed of the project along with other boards and commissions o Questions around how we turn a master plan into action steps to turn our ideas into reality. Example, presenting the Cultural District to City Council for final approval, utilizing plan with development projects.  Next Steps o Comments will be typed up by Corey Jannicelli and shared with A&H Council members to make additions. These comments will be included as an addendum, the document when reviewed by the Planning Commission in July. o Additional Comments should be sent to cjannicelli@fallschurchva.gov by July 7th. Old Business:  Founder Row Mural –Joe Muffler will attend our meeting in July to discuss the art aspect of Founders Row  West Falls Church Project –Carly Aubrey, Principal Planner will present at July meeting Roundtable:  Creative Cauldron is exploring places for outside performance venues and is looking for recommendations  EDA’s mural, Up Up and Away has been installed at Mr. Brown’s Park  EDA’s micro-program 2nd round grants are open to nonprofits  July 4 – VPIS will hold a virtual 4th of July reading  July 9 – VPIS will hold a virtual summer concert  VPIS has voted on supporting portraits of Maddy Gundry and Freddie Foote in City Hall Chambers and will serve as marketers and fundraisers.  Falls Church History Panel- Hosting meeting with community members this afternoon to discuss how we can better tell the honest history of Falls Church Founding and the racist policies of our City’s past.  Live Local Falls Church Masks- Still available email cathy@fallschurchchamber.org if you are interested  Falls Church Chamber of Commerce – is offering Healthy Living Pledge Course  Victorian Society plans to celebrate its 25th anniversary this fall 2 Adjourn Meeting was adjourned at 11:15 am Next Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 16 at 9:30 am Submitted: By Corey Jannicelli 3
