Environmental Sustainability Council Education Task Group Virtual Meeting: https://meet.lync.com/fallschurch-fallschurchva/kwalker/88F2MM08 Thursday, August 20, 2020, 7:00 – 8:00 pm Meeting called to order at 7:00 pm by Kate Walker, City of Falls Church Staff Liaison Members Present: Ms. Sarah Beaman-Bayldon, Thomas Jefferson (TJ) Coordinator Ms. Naomi Goodwin, Member/Volunteer Ms. Tina Ho, Operation EarthWatch (OpEW) Program Coordinator Ms. Jaime Iglehart, Mount Daniel (MD) Coordinator Ms. Maureen McNulty-Stephens, Saint James School (SJS) Coordinator Ms. Kate Walker, City of Falls Church Staff Liaison Business: 2019-20 OpEW T-Shirt Distribution  Email parents of 2019-20 participants to offer t-shirt delivery or pickup (Iglehart)  T-shirt distribution by school coordinators (Beaman-Bayldon, Iglehart, McNulty- Stephens) OpEW 2020-21 School Year  Program will be virtual  Virtual program will follow normal operating/activity schedule; six activities from October through March, fundraising complete by February, t-shirt order and distribution in May  Use of social media (Facebook), web site, FCCPS Communications (The Morning Announcements), email and other tools to communicate, post and collect activity sheets  New idea for program- virtual field trips Marketing/Recruitment  In an effort to increase participation, school coordinators to engage teachers to promote the program/encourage students (Beaman-Bayldon, Iglehart, McNulty- Stephens)  As in years past, initial communication about the program and how to participate will be sent out in early September (Ho)  Letters will be sent to sponsors and Mary Riley Styles Public Library to notify that OpEW program is still active for 2020-21 (Ho)  Explore opportunity to translate OpEW communications and activity sheets to other languages for Non-English/Non-Native English speakers (Goodwin, Iglehart) Middle School OpEW Program  Naomi Goodwin proposed expanding OpEW to Mary Ellen Henderson (MEH) and Saint James School (SJS) middle school students  Idea to work through student newsletter to include OpEW activity in each issue  Work with Maureen McNulty-Stephens to communicate with SJS  Potential activities include the use of iNaturalist app to identify plants, birds, and bugs; mapping of plant structures on the W&OD trail  Coordinate with ESC Habitat Restoration Task Group on activities  Middle school program will not be as formal as existing elementary program (no t-shirts)  Naomi Goodwin to organize and lead OpEW middle school program  Five of six members present were not opposed to idea of middle school program (Beaman-Bayldon, Goodwin, Ho, McNulty-Stephens, and Walker) o Iglehart had already left the meeting OpEW Web Site  www.operationearthwatch.org available for update  Updates to include current program information and aesthetic improvements  Web developer assistance may be available (McNulty-Stephens to work with contact) Meeting adjourned at 8:00 pm Minutes submitted by Tina Ho

All participating members of the Environmental Sustainability Council Education Task Group will be present at this meeting through electronic means. All members of the public may view the meeting via this Skype meeting link: https://meet.lync.com/fallschurch-fallschurchva/kwalker/88F2MM08. Public comment and questions may be submitted to kwalker@fallschurchva.gov until 7:30 pm on August 20, 2020. All comments are provided, in full, to the members of the Environmental Sustainability Council Education Task Group and comments received by the deadline will be summarized during the meeting. PLEASE NOTE: This meeting will be conducted via Skype for Business. If you do not already use Skype for Business, you will be prompted to install it when clicking the meeting link, so please take some time ahead of the meeting to do so. If needed, there are short instructions to install the applica- tion following the meeting agenda. Please email cmester@fallschurchva.gov if you need assistance with installation. You will have to allow Skype access to some features on your computer and accept their terms and conditions. After downloading Skype: Click the advertised meeting link to join the Skype meeting. When the app opens, click ‘Join as Guest’ and enter your name. Click the blue arrow to con- tinue. The meeting will start with your microphone and video features turned off. As an observer, you can view or listen to the meeting without these features. If you are a meeting participant, you should enable at least the microphone feature. Video is not required but may be useful. Depending on your role in the meeting, there may be restrictions on whether you can speak during the meeting.
