Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Meeting April 12th, 2023 MINUTES REGULAR MEETING OF THE ADVISORY BOARD OF RECREATION AND PARKS FALLS CHURCH COMMUNITY CENTER, KENNETH R. BURNETT BUILDING, 223 LITTLE FALLS STREET, FALLS CHURCH, VIRGINIA 22046 1 & 2. Call to Order & Roll Call Charley O’Hara called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Members present were Liz Weatherly, Brendan Kelly, Kathleen Tysse (School Board), Sharon Friedlander (Planning Commission), and City Council Liaison, Caroline Lian. Student representative Caroline Carmody was also in attendance. Staff members present were Danny Schlitt, Director Recreation & Parks (R&P) and Katharine Wakeley, Senior Administrative Assistant R&P. 3. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions A) Bill Brew brought forth a public petition for Recreation and Parks (R&P) to review the way in which they create winter basketball rosters, to ensure parity between teams. i. The Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks (ABRP) recommended that R&P evaluate how basketball draft is put together compared to surrounding districts; R&P Director, Danny Schlitt, agreed. 4. Minutes for Approval Charley O’Hara brought forth draft minutes from March 8th, 2023. Liz Weatherly moved to approve minutes, seconded by Kathleen Tysse, with Charley O’Hara, Brendan Kelly, and Sharon Friedlander abstaining. Minutes were approved by majority. 5. Recreation & Parks Director’s Report A) Danny Schlitt spoke about the following: i. Staffing: Camp Supervisor position is in second round interviews. Special Events Coordinator ad will be posted soon. ii. Special Events: Early Release Program continues, Egg Hunt, Memorial Day, and July 4th festivities are all on the horizon. Farmer’s Market hours have switched to spring/summer schedule, now open at 8 am. iii. Sports/camps: soccer brought in a record number of registrations, as did summer camps. iv. Cherry Hill Farmhouse: regular tour hours have begun again on Saturdays. v. Senior Center: new activity, chair volleyball, is a hit with seniors, along with monthly dances (most recently a St. Patrick’s Day dance), and educational classes brought to us by Marymount University. vi. Parks: recently cleaned up for the spring/summer. Berman Park has a temporary picnic shelter away from the pipe-bursting project lay-down area. Art walk plaques up for April 15th, 2023 launch. 6. New Business A) Independence Day Celebration: confirmed to take place at Meridian High School on July 2nd, 2023. Public will view from the stadium field, high school band will play at 7 pm, fireworks begin at about 9:20 pm. There will be food trucks, parking will be extremely limited on site. 7. Old Business A) Fellows Property will no longer be used as a lay down area for the City’s pipe bursting project. 8. Adjournment Liz Weatherly moved to adjourn; Kathleen Tysse seconded the motion.
