The Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, September 11th, 2024 7:00 PM
Art Room, Falls Church Community Center, Kenneth R. Burnett Building, 223 Little Falls Street, Falls Church, VA 22036
1. Call to Order
Amy Youngs called the meeting to order at 7:03pm. Members present were Michael Bracken, Jerrod Anderson (School
Board Liaison), Charles Moore, Erin Flynn, Bill Ackerman, Brendan Kelly, Sharon Friedlander and Student Representatives
Matthew Carmody and Anand Colby. Recreation & Parks (R&P) staff members present were Danny Schlitt, Director, Amy
Youngs, Deputy Director and Chetna Singal, Senior Administrative Assistant. Members of the public were Gene and Iva
Gresko, Peter Baroody and Heidi Wolff. Charles Moore participated virtually.
2. New Business –Annual Election of Officers
Election of Chair: Motion to nominate Charley O’Hara as Chair – Motion made by Michael Bracken, Seconded by
Brendan Kelly
Approved 5-0; 1 abstention.
Election of Vice-Chair: Motion to nominate Jenna Schroeder as Vice Chair – Motion made by Michael Bracken, Seconded
by Bill Ackerman
Approved 6-0
3. Receipt of Public Petitions and Board Member Petitions
Written comments in regards to sport courts from Vice Chair Jenna Schroeder were read aloud.
4. Old Business:
a. Sport court use – Report out by staff to include challenges and proposed solutions. Public comment on the
topic provided by Gene and Iva Gresko, Charles Moore and Peter Baroody. Residents should not get into
confrontation with users.
b. Park on the previous Fellows Property – An update was provided by staff. Site Plans are at 15%. Project will
wait to go to the architecture and engineering phase until a funding source is identified for the full project.
Naming the park will wait until the project is further along.
c. Berman Park – Neighbor feedback has been incorporated into the design. Motion to proceed with design was
made by Michael Bracken, seconded by Brenden Kelly. All in favor.
d. No smoking campaigns – Report out by Anand Colby. Officially joined Share the Air. Signs have arrived.
5. Minutes for Approval: June 12 draft minutes
Motion to approve by Michael Bracken, second by Bill Ackerman, all approved, Sharon Friedlander abstained.
6. Recreation Directors Report
Staff discussed the upcoming HVAC modernization project, plans for naming the Maple Avenue Parklet, installation of
utility box art, upcoming special events, parks and recreation month celebration, updates on youth sports, history
programs, fall classes and senior programs. Updates were also provided on software updates, clean week, and staff
turnover.
7. Adjournment
Motion to adjourn by Brendan Kelly, second by Michael Bracken.

11th, 2024. All comments will be provided to the Advisory Board of Recreation and Parks members
and comments received by the deadline will be read during the meeting.
