COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMISION
Meeting Minutes
SEPTEMBER 10, 2018
City Hall
Members Present: Lynn Love, Cheri Floyd, Diana Kinney, Sherrie Chenault, Larry Moore
Members Absent: Harelda Anderson, Pat Gross and Patrick Manchester
Staff Present: Julie Baird, Ass’t City Manager and Joanna Oliver, Secretary
Guest Present: Brian Baca – BBB; Steven Clarke
CALL TO ORDER
Chairman Lynn Love called the meeting to order at 4:05 pm with a quorum of members present the following
procedures were duly had and taken.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Diana Kinney made a motion to approve the August 8, 2018 minutes with addition of Lynn Love and Diana
Kinney name under Redcoat event. Cheri Floyd seconded. Motion carried.
BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU – BRIAN BACA
Mr. Brian Baca gave a presentation regarding the services that the Better Business Bureau and the services
that they provide. They are a non‐profit, non‐governmental reporting agency established in 1941 to stamp
out false advertising. Their mission is “To be the leader in advancing marketplace trust”. The BBB
accomplishes this in various ways – Creating a community of trustworthy businesses, Setting Standards for
marketplace trust, Encouraging and supporting best practices, Celebrating marketplace role models, and
Discouraging unethical marketplace behavior. They also provide certain dispute resolutions between
Community members and Businesses.
FOUR CORNERS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
Commissioners discussed having an Exhibitor Booth at this year’s conference to be held on Thursday, October
11, 2018. Cheri Floyd made a motion to have a booth. Larry Moore seconded. Motion carried. Lynn Love and
Cheri Floyd will be manning the booth.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Commissioners discussed having a Booth at the Annual National Night Out put on by the Police Department to
be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 from 4 to 7 pm. Larry Moore made a motion to have a booth. Sherrie
Chenault seconded. Motion carried. Lynn will have Pat Gross fill out the application and send into Georgette
Allen.
NEW COMMISSION BUSINESS
Lynn Love stated that the Durango CRC has started Civility First Durango. Lynn would like the
Commission to pursue a relationship with them regarding the Civility First program and would like to
meet with them. Diana Kinney made a motion to collaborate with Durango CRC. Cheri Floyd
seconded. Motion carried.
OLD COMMISSION BUSINESS
Lynn Love asked that the Budget discussion be tabled to the October meeting.
Julie Baird stated that she had a conversation with the Mayor regarding the Speaker Series. This fiscal
year we will have two speakers starting in January. She also gave us an update on the GRT increase
and that City Council approved. She informed the Commission of Cory Styron’s new position as
Director of Outdoor Recreation.
MLK DAY OF SERVICE
Steve Clarke and Liesl Dees gave us a brief presentation of the 2nd annual MLK Day of Service event that will be
held in January. Last year the City sponsored it and it was a great success. They work with the San Juan
College Volunteer Center. Some of their projects included Childhaven, Sycamore Center and Berg Park. Steve
asked if the CRC could sponsor them to help with the T‐shirts and meals. Joanna Oliver will send him an
application to fill out and the Commission will consider it at the October meeting.
