ran under San Juan Safe Communities Initiatives. Students in their junior year are nominated and which time
they fill out an application. After the screening process of all applicants, 14 students are selected. The group
visits the elementary schools in San Juan County and put on assemblies. They role play regarding a host of
various subjects. This year they have expanded to the Middle Schools. They perform 2 dances a year for the
High Schools and try to attend various City events around the City. Vickie would like the group to be
promoted more as a face in the Community. The students who participate in this program receive a $1,000
scholarship. The Commission stated that they would like to partner with the group in the future for a
community event.
TRANSCENDING (Mental Health Crisis) FORUM UPDATE
Chief Hebbe and Nicole Brown addressed the Commission regarding the outcome of the last forum regarding
Mental Health Crisis that was held in September. Mental Health is a tough topic, which gets quietly swept
under the carpet as there are not a lot of vocal advocates coming out. The panel were very knowledgeable
and the information that came out was very good and hopefully increased the awareness of the topic.
Commissioners would have liked to seen more individuals not associated with agencies there to tell their
stories. Chief Hebbe suggested the topic of the LGBTQ for the next forum in April.
