CITY OF FOUNTAIN VALLEY ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR THE DISABLED MINUTES March 1, 2018 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango called the Regular Meeting of the Advisory Committee for the Disabled to order at 6:00pm. ROLL CALL Members Present: Ramón Gálvez-Arango, Anna Nagmay, Tom Nguyen, Philip Nisco, Gary Osterbach, Susanne Seiden, and Jan Werts. Others Present: Councilmember John Collins and city liaison, Nora Webb. Members Absent: Herman Ajamian, John Borack, Terry Coakley, and Lawrence Judson. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Committee Member Phil Nisco moved to approve the minutes of the January 4, 2018 meeting. Second by Committee Member Tom Nguyen. Motion carried 7-0 in favor of approving the minutes. ONGOING BUSINESS A. Report from Subcommittee on Recreation Programs Committee Member Jan Werts reported that the dance on Friday, February 2, 2018 was a success and she thanked the volunteers who assisted. It was the first dance of the year held at The Center at Founders Village Senior and Community Center. There were 75 dancers not including the caregivers, volunteers and staff. All went well except for a delay in pickups from OCTA, the supervisor from Yellow Cab did his best to take care of the situation. Jan reported that the next dance will be a 50’s theme held on Friday, April 6, 2018. She reported that she has plenty of prizes thanks to John Borack’s brother. Jan also reported that Committee Member Herman Ajamian will take care of the refreshments for the dance. She thanked the volunteers in advance for coming to help out. Committee Member Susanne Seiden added a special thank you to Michelle Judson for coming to the dances to assist. B. Disability Friendly Business Awards Committee Member Phil Nisco reported that we have applications turned in for the Disability Friendly Business Awards. The applications will be discussed, and awards decided at the Advisory Committee for the Disabled meeting on September 6, 2018. The presentation for the applicant(s) chosen to be recognized will take place at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. C. Assist City Departments in implementation of guidelines for accessible facilities Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango conveyed to the committee the need to assist city departments in guidelines for accessible facilities. It was discussed that when there is a need the committee will bring the necessity to the city for implementation; as an example, this committee assisted the City when additional curb cuts were needed throughout the city. D. Facilitate development of recreational programs useable by persons with disabilities Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango conveyed to the committee the need to assist in facilitating recreational programs useable by persons with disabilities. There was a discussion and it was made clear that the main recreational programs we provide as a committee are the five dances per year. E. Information concerning special recreation equipment Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango conveyed to the committee the need to assist city departments in this area concerning special recreation equipment. It was discussed that the city has acquired accessible playground equipment at several of the parks in Fountain Valley. Staff will get an exact count of special recreation playground equipment in the city. F. Facilitation of development of barrier free buildings and facilities within the city Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango conveyed to the committee the need to assist city departments for barrier free buildings and facilities within the city. There was discussion that that the city takes care of the issues that are not barrier free through code enforcement. G. Work with various levels of education on the development and implementation of programs to assure maximum integration for students Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango conveyed to the committee the need to assist in this area of education and inclusion when required. It was discussed that our school districts do an outstanding job to insure they comply. H. Development of community awareness of employment potentials of persons with disabilities Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango conveyed to the committee that we need to be aware of any employment potentials of persons with disabilities according to our city guidelines. There was discussion that there are many companies that hire people with disabilities. If there was an issue that came to the Advisory Committee for the Disabled regarding employment, the committee would research the issue.
