City of Fountain Valley Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities MINUTES January 9, 2020 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Ramón Gálvez-Arango called the first Regular Meeting of 2020 for the Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities to order at 6:01pm. ROLL CALL Members Present: Herman Ajamian, Terry Coakley, Ramón Gálvez-Arango, Lawrence Judson, Philip Nisco, Gary Osterbach, Leonard Santoro, Susanne Seiden, and Jan Werts. Others Present: Visiting; Richard King, Debbie Paul, Bob Pegg, and Paula Pinheiro. Also present; Councilmember Kim Constantine, and City Liaison, Nora B.K. Webb. Members Absent: John Borack, and Anna Nagmay. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Committee Member Gary Osterbach moved to approve the minutes of the November 7, 2019 meeting. Second by Committee Member Leonard Santoro. Motion carried 9-0 in favor of approving the minutes. ONGOING BUSINESS A. Report from Subcommittee on Recreation Programs Committee Member Jan Werts reported that the next dance will take place on Friday, February 7, 2020. and will have a Valentine’s theme. She expressed appreciation for all the volunteers who assist at the dances. There was discussion that Michael Antonowitsch agreed to be the DJ once again for 2020. Committee Member Lawrence Judson reported that his wife, Michele Judson, would be at the dance to volunteer. B. Disability Friendly Business Awards Committee Member Phil Nisco reported that we had a successful year for the 2019 awards. He encouraged committee members to pass out the 2020 Awards forms and get the word out to our community. Staff will get the updated brochure on the City of Fountain Valley’s website. C. Report from Subcommittee on honoring two students from the Special Education program. Committee Member John Borack was not able to attend the meeting. He communicated to staff that he is in contact with the special education teacher at Los Amigos High School for the student recognition program for 2020. D. Report on Committee Responsibilities i. Assist City Departments in implementation of guidelines for accessible facilities No questions or comments. ii. Facilitate development of recreational programs useable by persons with disabilities No questions or comments. iii. Information concerning special recreation equipment No questions or comments. iv. Facilitation of development of barrier free buildings and facilities within the city No questions or comments. v. Work with various levels of education on the development and implementation of programs to assure maximum integration for students with disabilities No questions or comments.  vi. Development of community awareness of employment potentials of persons with disabilities No questions or comments. NEW BUSINESS N/A Public Comments Richard King and Paula Pinheiro brought up concerns about getting to the market safely from their home behind Memorial Care Medical Center. There was a lot of discussion. Councilmember Kim Constantine and staff agreed to look into the situation. Committee Comments Committee Member Susanne Seiden brought up a situation with a friend of hers regarding trash cans. Councilmember Kim Constantine and staff agreed to look into the situation. Committee Member Herman Ajamian reported on a dangerous intersection at Ward and Ellis where the traffic light is not long enough for the traffic patterns on Ward and Ellis. Another concern is near Coronado Park, there is a crosswalk needed at Robin and Bushard. Councilmember Kim Constantine and staff agreed to look into the situation.
