Library Board

Special Board Meeting August 12, 2014 Board Member Connie Schmeichel called the meeting to order at 1:06 p.m. in the library east service building with the following members present: Connie Schmeichel, Cindy Slykhuis, Jan Therien and Virginia Meyer. Also present was Director Janet Davenport and Mary Lee Fitzsimons. The meeting was preceded by publicized notice in the Fremont Tribune and the agenda displayed in the municipal building, the Keene Memorial Library, online at www.fremontne.gov/library, and distributed and emailed to the Library Board members on August 6, 2014 and is open to the public. A copy of the open meeting law is posted continually for public inspection and is located near the entrance to the Board Room. Unfinished Business - none New Business – New Board Member - Virginia Meyer was welcomed to her first meeting of the Board. Mary Lee Fitzsimons conducted a workshop on “the Effective Advisory Board”. The session began with Board members expressing their expectations of the workshop. Discussion followed on the guidelines for Advisory Boards from the Nebraska Library Board Manual (pub. 11/2006). Examples of the duties of library boards from the Fremont Municipal Code and the LaVista Board Guidelines we reviewed. The board moved on to discuss practical ways to strength the Advisory Board and make it more productive. Stemming from discussion the Board identified the need to develop a work plan that identified goals and responsibilities for the Board and assign Board members to be point persons for tasks in attaining goals. Two primary Goals were identified, strengthening communication between the Board, the Library and City officials and outreach into the community to spread information on the library and seek input to provide advice to the Library and City Council. The outcomes of this meeting will be reviewed at the next Board meeting and the initial steps in developing a 5 month work plan will be discussed. There after quarterly plans will be adopted for the Board and an annual review of the needs, goals and tasks of the Board will be held.
