MINUTES OF PARKS & RECREATION BOARD MEETING
Tuesday, June 5, 2018
7:00 pm – Meeting Room of City Auditorium - 925 N Broad ST
PRESENT: Matt Bechtel, Bob Brown, Don Cunningham, Connie Giese, Kim Koski, Steve Landholm,
Dan Moran, Ann Prince, Nate Schwanke.
1. Call to Order – Meeting convened at 7:13pm. The agenda displayed at City Hall, 400 E Military and was
distributed to the Mayor, City Council and the Park Board, on June 1, 2018 and is open to the public. The open
meeting law is posted continually for public inspection.
2. Roll Call – 4 present. Christensen Hillis, Eairleywine absent.
3. Reading of the Park & Recreation Board Minutes – Motion was made by Giese, seconded by Prince to dispense
with the reading of the minutes and approve as sent. Motion carried.
4. Kiwanis Club Playground Equipment Project – Don Cunningham represented the Kiwanis Executive Board and he
explained the Kiwanian’s vision of creating a large all-inclusive playground at Johnson Park. The Kiwanis club
would be responsible for all fundraising. Goal is to have it completed by August, 2019. Cunningham asked for
the Park Board’s support of this project. Motion was made by Moran, seconded by Giese to support the project
and forward it on to the City Council for final approval. Motion carried. Cunningham will keep the board
informed as the project progresses.
5. Request for use of Christensen Field Parking Lot, Ridge Road Trail and Hormel Park on Saturday, May 4, 2019
from 8:30am – 11am by the Fremont Cosmo Club for annual Spokes and Sneakers fundraiser. Motion was made
by Giese, seconded by Prince to approve and forward to City Council for final approval. Motion carried.
6. Recreation Report – Schwanke
*All summer programs are up and running. Numbers are strong in all programs!
*Pools opened on Memorial Day. Splash had 802 swimmers and Ronin had 221!
*Summer staffs are full strength.
*We have heard positive feedback since taking over the men’s and women’s softball leagues.
7. Director’s Report – Koski
*MainStreet Concerts will be every Thursday in June. Recreation staff will provide kids activities from 6:30-8pm
during the concerts.
*Lifeguards are doing a great job! Had the first save of the season at Ronin on opening day.
*Irrigation project at Ridge Cemetery is in its final stages of completion. Contractor needs to do some grading
then cemetery staff will put down grass seed. Staff is working with the contractor to get the timer
programmed.
*Plan for the splash pad at JCF Park is a late summer/fall install.
*Park shop crews are doing the finish work at the Memorial Complex parking lot and Veteran’s Memorial.
Department of Utilities will assist with tapping into the water line and installing a water pit for water and
irrigation.
*Work continues on writing specs for ADA upgrades at senior center and RFP for engineered drawings for City
Auditorium upgrades.
*Ridge Cemetery Association meeting on June 13.
8. Other Business – Moran is the FHS Boys JV Soccer Coach. He expressed concerns about an issue a group of 4 of
his players had with FSC personnel. The boys were wanting to get some extra practice in and were told they
could not be on the fields. Koski will work on better communication with the FSC and how individuals can get
access to the facility after normal high school practice time.
9. Next Meeting – Tuesday, August 7, 2018 (No scheduled meeting in July).
10. Adjournment – motion was made by Moran, seconded by Giese to adjourn. Motion carried. The meeting
adjourned at 7:40 pm.

four hours prior to said meeting; that the minutes of the Park Board of the Parks and Recreation Department, Fremont, Nebraska
were in written form and available for public inspection prior to the next convened meeting of said body.
