MINUTES OF PARKS & RECREATION BOARD MEETING
Monday, August 1st, 2022
City Hall 2nd Floor Conference Room– 7pm
Present: Dian Christensen-Hills, Aaron Paden, Dan Moran, Connie Giese, Nate Schwanke, Wendy
Eairleywine, Nick Hansen, Jody Sanders, and Tammy McKeighan.
1. Call to Order: Meeting was called to order at 7:03pm by Chairman Giese. The agenda displayed
at City Hall, 400 E Military and was distributed to the Park Board, Mayor and City Council on July
27th, 2022 and is open to the public. The open meeting law is posted continually for public
inspection.
2. Roll Call: Roll Call showed members Eairleywine, Giese, Moran, Paden, and Christensen-Hills
present. Absent: Washburn. City Administrator Sanders present as guest.
3. Open Meeting Law posted for public review.
4. Reading of the Parks & Recreation Board Minutes, June 6th, 2022. Christensen-Hills moved to
suspend the reading since the board has read them, seconded by Giese, to suspend the reading
of June 6th minutes. Motion carried.
5. The board discussed about vending in the parks. Hansen discussed the ordinance that was
passed by city council. Hansen attached the ordinance for board members to view before
August board meeting. Discussion was brought up to amend park hours into the ordinance.
Motion was made by Paden. Seconded by Giese.
6. Recreation Report – Schwanke
*Summer Recreation report: Schwanke provided update of recreation programs that are
finishing up. Schwanke discussed programs were up and position were all filled this summer.
Schwanke discussed about changes next Summer to the playground kids’ programs. Schwanke
discussed the pools were extremely busy with the high temperatures this Summer.
7. Director Report- Hansen
*Auditorium project: Hansen provided an update on Library finishing moving over to the
Auditorium. Hansen discussed coordinating keys to different staff, moving P&R tables and
chairs, adding additional flooring. We’ve been in contact with BLT to get an estimate to put the
thermostats onto different units instead of individual units.
*Parks Update- Hansen discussed M&E will repair cracks, punctured hoes, and scratched in
graffiti. Hansen discussed the parks targeted were Rotary, Buckridge, Miller, Davenport, Ronin,
Ruwe, and Van Anda. Hansen discussed a donation was made for cornhole/bage in Van Anda
parks. Hansen discussed parks would pour the pads to set the games. Hansen discussed Friends
in the Park wanted to donate an expression swing with toddler seat and parent seat attached.
Discussion with board they suggested Clemmons as the destination. Hansen discussed the pool
compressor was installed and will be operational for a month.
*Forestry update
Hansen discussed he applied for 10 free trees through the NE Arboretum.
*Open Positions: Hansen discussed they are fully staffed for maintenance II & III positions. He
mentioned they have a full-time Senior Office Associate open.
*Leases/Agreements: Hansen discussed baseball and softball organizations have reached out to
P&R to discuss possible leases or agreements for specific fields.
*Civic Recreation Software: Hansen discussed P&R is continuing to build the website and hoping
to be live October 1st.
*Capital Improvement Plan: Hansen discussed CIP projects that are projected for the 2021-22
budget.
8. Next Meeting – Monday, August 1st, 2022, 7pm, City Hall 2nd Floor Conference Room.
9. Adjournment- Motion was made by Paden, seconded by Geise to adjourn. Motion carried.
Meeting adjourned at 7:43pm.
