CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, December 4, 2017 Meeting held in City Council Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Jesus Cuevas, Youth Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Flores, Gordon, L. Klotz Members Absent: Lampson Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Cristian Gonzalez, Muller, Rodriguez, Yebra Members Absent: Sessions 6:01pm – Commissioner Sessions arrived C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None D. PRESENTATIONS: Audience member Jennifer Collier introduced and shared a little about herself to the Galt Youth Commission. 1. Approval of minutes A motion was made to approve the November 6, 2017 minutes. Moved: Rodriguez Second: O. Klotz Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 2. Treasurer’s Report Commissioner Franco reviewed the funds in the Galt Youth Commission account. She shared that the Galt Youth Commission total balance is $1,209.39. 3. Community Project: “It Can Wait” Campaign Commissioner Yebra shared that she had emailed Alice Perez and was waiting a response. 4. Community Project: Recycling Art Exhibit The subcommittee shared that they were trying to set up a meeting with the teachers from Liberty Ranch and Galt High School in order to brainstorm, budget, and plan for the art exhibit. Commissioner Rodriguez talked about a field trip the subcommittee went on and reflected on how they were attempting to incorporate the ideas from the field trip into the art exhibit. She also shared that the subcommittee applied for the GABY Grant and were waiting for the results. Commissioner Cuevas shared that they were working on setting a date around April. 5. Community Project: Little Library Project Commissioner Rodriguez shared that she emailed some teachers and was waiting for a response. She also consulted with the Liberty Ranch agriculture teacher Mr. Farinelli to ensure the measurements of supplies approved by the commission will adequately build five boxes. 6. Lessons of Leadership Adult Mentor Klotz briefly reviewed last month’s leadership lesson and then the Youth Commissioners participated in an activity where they randomly picked an object out of a bag and then had to sell it to the rest of the group. 6:17 Commissioner Klotz and Adult Mentor Gordon left 7. Galt Herald Newspaper Commissioner Trevizo presented an article called “Youth Experience the Reality of Prison Life Before It’s Too Late.” It talked about how trouble making youth experience prison life in the Juvenile Awareness Interactive Learning program. 8. Galt Rotary Community Dinner Adult Mentor Klotz informed the Youth Commission about the Galt Rotary Community Dinner on Saturday, December 16 and asked the Youth Commissioners to sign up to volunteer at the event. 9. Winter Bird Festival Passed due to lack of representation. 10. Editorial Board Update Commissioners Cristian Gonzalez and Yebra shared that the articles for the month were about Christmas, MESA Quiz Bowl, Climate Change, Finals after Christmas Break, and the monthly Man on the Street. 11. City Council Update Passed due to lack of representation. 14. Future Agenda Items None 15. Around the Horn/Give Your Gratitude Adult Mentor Gordon reminded the Youth Commission to attend the City of Galt’s committee/commissions recognition at the City Council Meeting. Commissioner Cuevas talked about a future social outing for the commission and provided some examples of past outings the commission had done in the past. ADJOURNMENT: Youth Chair J. Speakers may address commission on any agenda item during consideration of the item. Please come to the podium and limit your comments to three (3) minutes. D. PRESENTATIONS: E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Approval of minutes for the meeting of November 6, 2017 Action Item RECOMMENDATION: Approve the minutes. 2. Treasurer’s Report Information Item Commissioner Franco will overview funds in the Galt Youth Commission account. 3. Community Project: “It Can Wait” Campaign Information Item Update from Commissioner Yebra regarding AT&T’s texting and driving campaign. 4. Community Project: Recycling Art Exhibit Information Item Subcommittee will provide an update and recommendations. 5. Community Project: Little Library Project Information Item Commissioner Rodriguez will provide an update. 6. Lessons of Leadership Information Item Adult Mentor Klotz will present this month’s lesson. 7. Galt Herald Newspaper Information Item Commissioner Trevizo will present an article affecting the youth 8. Galt Rotary Community Dinner Information Item Adult Mentor Leesa Klotz will provide an update and pass out sign-up sheet to volunteer. 9. Winter Bird Festival Information Item Commissioner Cuevas will provide an update on this event. 10. Editorial Board Update Information Item Commissioner Yebra and Cristian Gonzalez will provide an update. 11. City Council Update Information Item Councilmember Lampson will present this month’s city council update. 14. Future Agenda Items 15.
