CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, February 5, 2018 Meeting held in City Council Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Jesus Cuevas, Youth Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Flores, Gordon, L. Klotz, Lampson Members Absent: Collier Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Cristian Gonzalez, O. Klotz, Muller, Rodriguez, Sessions, Trevizo, Yebra C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None D. PRESENTATIONS: Passed due to lack of representation. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Officer Kevin Tonn Memorial 5K Run Robin Nelson shared information about the Kevin Tonn Memorial 5K Run and asked the commission to help advertise the event as well as volunteer at the race. Commissioners Cuevas, Muller, Rodriguez, and Sessions and Adult Mentor Cross volunteered to serve on a subcommittee. A motion was made to support the Kevin Tonn Memorial Run. Moved: Muller Second: Klotz Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 2. Icebreaker: Meet Jennifer Collier Tabled. 3. Approval of minutes for the meeting of January 8, 2018 A motion was made to approve the January 8, 2018 minutes. Moved: Rodriguez Second: Trevizo Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 4. Treasurer’s Report Commissioner Franco shared that the new total balance was $1,359.39 due to the Winter Bird Festival and the return of funding for the Little Library Project. 5. Winter Bird Festival Debrief Adult Mentor Flores shared that the profit from the Winter Bird Festival was $75 due to supplies being donated as well as supplies being used from previous years. She shared that while it wasn’t a successful fundraiser, it did help advertise the Galt Youth Commission. 6. 2018 GYC Recruitment Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez shared that the application process for the Galt Youth Commission would start in February and end in April with five open positions. It was decided that the interview panel would consist of Commissioners Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Rodriguez, Trevizo, and possibly Commissioners Klotz and Muller. 7. John Moran Scholarship Adult Mentor Flores shared that she has not yet met with Commissioner Gonzalez to go over the particulars of the scholarship, but the scholarships would most likely be awarded in late May. 8. Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast Adult Mentor Flores shared that although the subcommittee had not met yet they would be reaching out to the Rotary and Lion’s Club to ask for donations and they anticipated the budget to be about $300 based on previous years. 9. Community Project: “It Can Wait” Campaign Commissioner Yebra shared that Alice Perez from AT&T provided an update to the commission regarding high school participation. Liberty Ranch High School Principal Joe Saramago stated the school was unable to participate in the “It Can Wait Campaign” in April. However, Ms. Perez suggested a time in October and is waiting for him to get back about that date. She also shared Galt High School is interested in participating in the “It Can Wait” Campaign and Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez will be setting up a planning meeting with Principal Kellie Beck and Alice Perez. 10. Community Project: Operation Earth: Project Green Art Exhibit Commissioner Celio Gonzalez shared that they had set up dates to meet with the teachers from both schools. He also talked about how they were considering opening up the event to younger kids with activities and introducing climate change and explaining it to increase attendance. Commissioner Rodriguez shared that they were awarded the Gaby Grant for $700. 11. Lessons of Leadership Adult Mentor Klotz shared the 7 basic principles that could help people get rid of mental “garbage” that could get in the way of their personal and professional success, from The Garbage Man’s Guide to Life: Having a Difficult Conversation. 6:58pm Jennifer Collier arrived Icebreaker: Meet Jennifer Collier Commissioners asked various questions to learn about the youth commission’s newest adult mentor. 12. Galt Herald Newspaper Commissioner Muller presented an article about how the high school district workshop focused on hiring a superintendent. They also discussed different events occurring at the high schools. 13. Editorial Board Updates Commissioners Cristian Gonzalez and Yebra shared that the articles for the month of February were about the National Honor Society, the Art Exhibit, the Liberty Art Exhibit, Galt Art, and the monthly Man on the Street. 14. City Council Update Councilmember Lampson shared that the council was going through negotiations with the unions. She also shared that Parks and Recreation was presenting projects and they were trying to come up with ways to improve the community such as how city council is enforcing codes and issuing citations to businesses who do not follow them. 15. GYC Social Tabled. 16. Future Agenda Items Dia de los Libros Lego houses for the Art Exhibit 15. GYC Social Adult Mentor Klotz commended Commissioners Cuevas and Rodriguez for participating in and winning the Galt Sunrise Rotary Speech Contest. ADJOURNMENT: Youth Chair J.
