CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, March 5, 2018 Meeting held in City Council Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Jesus Cuevas, Youth Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:03 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Cross, Gordon, L. Klotz, Lampson Members Absent: Collier, Flores Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Cristian Gonzalez, O. Klotz, Muller, Rodriguez, Sessions, Trevizo, Yebra C. PUBLIC COMMENT: Barbara Payne informed the commission about the Beautification Committee and how their goal is to clean up Galt and get schools involved. She shared her idea of approaching the high schools with a photography contest of the best places in Galt and asked the commissioners to let her know if they had any other ideas of ways to involve students. D. PRESENTATIONS: None E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Approval of minutes for the meetings of February 5, 2018 A motion was made to approve the February 5, 2018 minutes. Moved: Rodriguez Second: Klotz Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 2. Treasurer’s Report Treasurer Franco shared that the new total balance was $2,334.39 due to the Winter Bird Festival fundraiser and the GABY Grant. 3. “It Can Wait” Campaign Update Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez shared that the subcommittee and Alice Perez met with Galt High’s principal and decided they wanted to hold an assembly with a guest speaker and virtual reality simulators. He also added that the subcommittee wanted to have the students sign a pledge not to drive distracted. 6:14 Collier arrived 4. Operation Earth: Project Green Update Commissioner Celio Gonzalez shared that they contacted the teachers at Galt High School. They were excited about helping and started projects for the art exhibit. Commissioner Klotz shared that she priced the supplies and came up with a budget. Commissioner Rodriguez talked to the Free Thinkers Club at Liberty Ranch High School and they were interested in helping. She suggested they could have a community service day after school. Adult Mentor Collier shared that some elementary schools were doing kite projects for the exhibit. A motion was made for the budget for Operation Earth: Project Green not to exceed $1000. Moved: Muller Second: Trevizo Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 5. Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast Commissioner Sessions informed the commission that the Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast is Saturday, March 24 from 7am-10am. She shared that they needed about fifteen volunteers from 6am-11am the day of the breakfast and volunteers to help set up the day before. She added that the Lion’s Club was helping cook and the Galt Rotary was donating $200 for sausages. She asked for a budget of $300. A motion was made for the budget for the Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast not to exceed $300. Moved: Klotz Second: Muller Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 6. John Moran Scholarship Update No new information. 7. Dia de Los Niños Library Event Adult Mentor Gordon informed the youth commission about what Dia de Los Niños is and asked if any of the commissioners were interested in participating in the event. A subcommittee consisting of Commissioners Cuevas, Cristian Gonzalez, Muller, Rodriguez, and Yebra was formed. 8. Editorial Board Update Commissioners Cristian Gonzalez and Yebra shared that the articles for the month of March were about the Walk Out in schools, elections for ASB and class elections, the Easter egg hunt fundraiser, update on Operation Earth: Project Green, and then monthly Man on the Street which was “What are your plans for spring break?” 9. City Council Update Councilmember Lampson shared that City Council was looking at raising Park and Recreation’s fees. She added that they needed more money to keep up Galt’s parks and pools. 10. Future Agenda Items GYC Social Lego House for Operation Earth: Project Green Exhibit Kevin Tonn Memorial Run Update ADJOURNMENT: Youth Chair J. Cuevas adjourned the meeting at 6:37P.M. Approval of minutes for the meetings of February 5, 2018 Action Item RECOMMENDATION: Approve the minutes. 2. Treasurer’s Report. Information Item Treasurer Franco will overview the funds existing in the GYC account as well as treasurer’s report. 3. “It Can Wait” Campaign Update Information Item Commissioner Cristian Gonzales will provide an update. 4. Operation Earth: Project Green Update Action Item Subcommittee members will provide an update and submit a budget request. 5. Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast Action Item Adult Mentor Flores will provide an update and request a budget for consideration. 6. John Moran Scholarship Update Information Item Members of the subcommittee will provide an update. 7. Dia De Los Niños Library Event Action Item Commission will discuss this April 28th event and take action on commitment. Youth Commission Agenda March 5, 2018 8.
