CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, April 2, 2018 Meeting held in City Council Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Jesus Cuevas, Youth Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:03 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Collier, Cross, Flores, Gordon, L. Klotz, Lampson Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Franco, Celio Gonzalez, Cristian Gonzalez, O. Klotz, Rodriguez, Sessions, Trevizo, Yebra Youth Members Absent: Muller C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None D. PRESENTATIONS: None E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Approval of minutes for the meetings of March 5, 2018 A motion was made to approve the March 5, 2018 minutes. Moved: Sessions Second: Klotz Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 2. Treasurer’s Report Treasurer Franco shared expenditures for the art exhibit of $135.31 for posters for the art exhibit payable to Express Type and Graphics and four receipts from adult mentor Leesa Klotz totaling $624.41. The receipts listed art exhibit materials from Amazon as well as the cost for renting the pipe and draping from Giuffra’s Party Rental. With $1,700 budgeted for the event, the remaining balance is $940.28. The available balance for general spending is $634.39. 3. “It Can Wait” Campaign Update Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez shared that the event was on April 3, 2018 at Galt High School. He explained that the juniors and seniors were divided into two groups for a forty-minute presentation with community leaders and then interactive stations after. 4. Operation Earth: Project Green Art Exhibit Update Commissioner Celio Gonzalez shared that Galt High School had finished almost all their projects. Adult Mentor Gordon informed the commission that the subcommittee had purchased posters to advertise the art exhibit and were posted. However, he needed more help getting the rest of them out. Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez shared that he advertised the art exhibit on social media, hung some posters up in restaurants and stores around town, and sent emails with information about the art exhibit. Commissioner Rodriguez added that she was working on biomes as a project for the art exhibit and shared that she planned on asking Girl Scouts for their help for the art exhibit. 5. Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast Commissioner Sessions informed the commission that the Eggstravaganza Pancake Breakfast was cancelled due to possible bad weather since the kitchen inside was unavailable to use. She also shared that the subcommittee planned on asking the Galt Sunrise Rotary if the commission could use the $200 they donated for sausages for the scholarship. 6. John Moran Scholarship Update Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez informed that the subcommittee had decided on having two $250 scholarships, one for each school. The commission then discussed whether or not home schoolers should be eligible to scholarship. It was decided to have two scholarships $250 each with a maximum of one per school in order to allow home schoolers to apply. A motion was made to divide the scholarship into two scholarships of $250 with a maximum of one per high school. Moved: Klotz Second: Trevizo Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez also requested a name change for the scholarship from the John Moran Scholarship to the Galt Youth Commission Scholarship. Moved: Sessions Second: Klotz Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 The commission discussed the eligibility of Galt Youth Commission members for the scholarship and it was decided to keep the scholarship open to commission members. 7. Dia de Los Niños Library Event Adult Mentor Collier shared that for Dia de Los Niños, the commission’s booth is going to be face paint. She informed the commission that the event was on April 28 and asked commissioners to sign up to volunteer. 8. Kevin Tonn Memorial Run Update Commissioner Sessions shared that there were posters hung and flyers advertising the run which was on June 30. The subcommittee encouraged the commissioners to volunteer and find volunteers to help at the race. 9. Galt Youth Commission Recruitment Update Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez shared that he went to McCaffrey and left applications at the school, talked to teachers of Leadership and AVID classes, and talked to clubs. 10. Editorial Board Update Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez and Yebra shared the editorials the editorial board was writing for the month. 11. City Council Update Councilmember Lampson shared about a community grant that the Galt Youth Commission might be eligible to apply for. She also informed the commission about a Galt connect app and encouraged them to download it to submit any problems with Galt. 12. GYC Dinner Chair Cuevas decided that a survey would be sent out to determine what food would be at the dinner. A motion was made to approve the budget for the Galt Youth Commission dinner not to exceed $150. Moved: Cuevas Second: Klotz Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 13. John Moran Scholarship Action Item Subcommittee will report on scholarship process, timelines, and application. Commission will take action on how many scholarships to provide. 7. Dia De Los Niños Library Event Information/Action Item Subcommittee will provide update and request a budget (if necessary). 8. Kevin Tonn Memorial Run Update Information Item Commissioner Sessions will provide on this event that we’re supporting this summer. 9. Galt Youth Commission Recruitment Update Information Item Commissioner Cristian Gonzalez will share outreach efforts and provide an update. 10. City Council Update Information Item Councilmember Lampson will present this month’s city council update. 12.
