CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, July 2, 2018 Meeting held in City Community Room A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: John Gordon, Adult Mentor, called the meeting to order at 6:00P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Flores, Gordon, Lampson Members Absent: Collier, Cross, Klotz Youth Members Present: Franco, Gonzalez, Martin, Ramos, Rivas, Rodriguez, Stalians, Trevizo, Yebra Members Absent: Wilcox C. PUBLIC COMMENT: None D. PRESENTATIONS: T.J. Guidotti from the Galt Police Department invited the Galt Youth Commission to participate in this year’s National Night Out on August 7th from 6—8pm. The event will take place in three locations: Meadowview Park, Marian O. Lawrence Library and Galt Community Park. Each location will have bounce houses and free food. Police Chief Sockman also presented on National Night Out as well as sharing an idea to get input from youth regarding safety. Police Chief is proposing to develop a youth advisory committee and requested input from the commission. Adult Mentor Gordon would solicit interest from the commissioners later in the meeting. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Retreat Reflection Adult Mentor Gordon facilitated a brief discussion regarding this year’s retreat which was held on June 29th. The Comfort Inn generously donated space to hold the retreat. Each commissioner shared what they liked about the retreat. Overall, they felt the retreat was a valuable experience. 2. Kevin Tonn 5K Reflections Commissioners provided the following feedback regarding the race: it felt a little unorganized, the maps were hard to read making it challenging to get to the appropriate spots, there were no marking on the streets which made it confusing for runners at certain turns, and the coordination of the getting water set up at the spots was troublesome as some spots never received water. 3. Commissioner’s Responsibilities Adult Mentor Gordon overviewed the purpose and importance of the Galt Youth Commission Ordinance, bylaws and the Brown Act. 4. Making a Motion Adult Mentor Gordon discussed the basics on making a motion. 5. Approval of minutes for the meetings of May 7, 2018 The Commission took action to approve the minutes. Moved: J. Rodriguez Second: D. Trevizo Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 6. Treasurer’s Report Adult Mentor Gordon presented an Excel spreadsheet and overviewed the budget for the Galt Youth Commission. Based on the spreadsheet, the amount of funds available for the youth commission to spend is $920.14. The report also reviewed expenditures of $88.61 for the Ice Cream Social and $194.90 for food costs associated with the youth commission retreat. 7. Revised Approval of Galt Youth Commission Adult Mentor Retreat Commission took action to amend the 2018/19 and 2019/20 budget proposal to include the adult mentor retreat. Moved: D. Trevizo Second: M. Franco Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 8. Adult Mentor Retreat Food Costs Commission took action to approve food costs not to exceed $100 for adult mentor retreat. Moved: A. Yebra Second: D. Trevizo Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 9. National Night Out As a follow up discussion to TJ Guidotti’s presentation, the commission expressed interest as nearly all volunteered to participate. There were concerns about setting up tables especially since the adult mentors will be unavailable since their retreat is that evening. Council Member Lampson felt that commissioners will be able to ride in police cars and travel to the three locations. Commissioner Franco mentioned that commissioners need to fill out forms to ride in the cars. The commission took action to commit to participating at National Night Out. Moved: D. Trevizo Second: M. Franco Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 Commissioners Rodriguez and Yebra will follow up with TJ Guidotti regarding logistics. Council Member Lampson will serve as the adult supporting the event. 10. Galt Youth Commission Scholarship Recipients Adult Mentor Flores overviewed the scholarship process and announced the following individuals were selected to receive the Galt Youth Commission Scholarship: Cami Edlund and Hana Koyama. Each recipient will receive $250 upon providing proof of college or trade school enrollment. 11. City Council Update Council Member Lampson shared that City Council recently approved to pay 1/3 of the cost of for providing school resource officers at the middle and high schools. 12. Galt Herald Newspaper Commissioners Gonzalez and Rodriguez shared the commission’s partnership through submitting editorials to the Galt Herald as well as the intent of this standing agenda item and the importance of the newspaper in the commission’s work. 13. Overview of the GYC Officer Positions Adult Mentor Gordon asked officers from last year to summarize their jobs and commitments in each officer role. Gordon informed the commission that officer elections will be held at next month’s meeting. Candidates interested in running for an officer position should come prepared with a short speech. 14. Future Agenda Items Future agenda items include the Police Chief’s Youth Advisory Committee 15. Around the Horn/Give Your Gratitude Commissioners Rodriguez, Martin, Ramos and Yebra expressed interest in serving on the Police Chief’s Youth Advisory Committee. Adult mentor Gordon mentioned a potential community service opportunity through a local concert called Vet Traxx. ADJOURNMENT: Adult Mentor Gordon adjourned the meeting at 7:53 P.M.
