CITY OF GALT GALT CITY COUNCIL YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, December 3, 2018 Meeting held in City Hall Chambers A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Chair Gonzalez, called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Collier, Flores, Gordon, L. Klotz Adult Mentors Absent: Cross, Lampson Youth Members Present: Cuevas, Franco, Gonzalez, Martin, Ramos, Rivas, Rodriguez, Stalians (entered at 6:01pm), Trevizo, Yebra C. PRESENTATIONS: The Commission had a presentation about the city’s Climate Action Plan by Chris Erias. He overviewed ideas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and requested feedback from the Commission as well as listened to recommendations from the commissioners. D. PUBLIC COMMENT: None E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. Approval of minutes for the meeting of November 5 , 2018 The Commission took action to approve the minutes. Moved: J. Rodriguez Second: D. Trevizo Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 2. Treasurer’s Report Commissioner Franco gave us total balance of $ 1,578.33 which is no change from last month. There are the community projects that still need approved budgets. The discussion on the GYC scholarship had two options. There could be one scholarship for $500 or two scholarships for $250. The Commission agreed on having two scholarships one for each high school. Moved: D. Trevizo Second: C. Cuevas Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 1 3. City Council Update No update due to lack of city council representation. 4. GYC Team Building Commissioner Cuevas presented different team building opportunities for the Commission: an escape room, hiking, bowling, painting, and Peak Adventures at Sacramento State University. Each activity came with its own budget. The most expensive one was the escape room while the cheapest was hiking. The Commissioners took a poll on which activity they should choose and the highest score was the escape room and in second was hiking. The Commission found out about a private donation that could be used for both activities, and they have to figure out the availability for the escape room. 5. Winter Bird Festival Adult Mentor Klotz discussed the Commission's commitments regarding the Winter Bird Festival. In January, the Commission would have to give out brochures and hang posters for the publicity of the event. This event will take place on February 2nd and the Commission would sell coffee and donuts as a fundraiser. The Commission took action to commit to the Winter Bird Festival activities. Moved: H. Stalians Second: C. Cuevas Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 While the entire Commission expressed interest in serving on the subcommittee, Commissioner Yebra will take the lead. A budget will be proposed next month. 6. Rotary Community Dinner Adult Mentor Klotz gives an overview of an annual event and the request of their participation. They are able to get community service hours by helping with packing food for home delivery. This event will take place on December 15th from 12:00 - 2:00 pm. The Commission took action to commit to helping at the Community Dinner. Moved: J. Rodriguez Second: A. Rivas Ayes: 9 Nays: 0 Abstain: 1 7. Lighting of the Night Reflection The Commissioners who attended the event gave an overview of how helping at the event went. Commissioner Franco and Commissioner Trevizo were in charge of helping with decorating the cookies, they said the job became hard since they ran out of cookie decorations but the performances were great and they enjoyed it. Commissioner Yebra, Commissioner Cuevas, and Commissioner Rivas helped with the arts and crafts station and said it was a success. 8. Strengths Training Reflection Adult Mentor Collier talks about the progress and success of the strengths assessments. She asks the Commission questions on how they can use their strengths to lead. The Commission discusses how their strengths can help work well together.  9. Community Project: It Can Wait Campaign Commissioner Yebra provided an update by informing the Commission that an alternative for the assembly would not be an effective use of their time to spread the important information. Commissioner Yebra suggested dropping the idea. 10. Community Project: Random Acts of Kindness Commissioner Rodriguez provided an update for her Random Acts of Kindness week. From February 9th to the 15th they will have a different activity to do. There are seven projects: on the 9th the subcommittee can go to the retirement homes to give valentines and roses, the 10th will be giving canned food, the 11th they will have a lemonade stand at a park, the 12th they will have baked goods for the office staffs of schools, the 13th they will make thank you cards to all the non-profits, the 14th they will give valentines around school, and on the 15th they will have a field day at Marengo Ranch. Adult Mentor Gordon was concerned about serving lemonade and asked the subcommittee to follow up with the City to get their permission before proceeding. They have backup plans for if some of these ideas do not work. A motion was made to approve a budget not to exceed $200. Moved: D. Trevizo Second: H. Stalians Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 11. Community Project: Valley Oaks Marketplace Project Commissioner Ramos provided an update and informs the Commission that there has been no update or contact from the grant that would fund this project. They expect a response by December 14th. Students who are interested in helping may need to go through training to help other students. 12. Community Project: Senior Technology Project Commissioner Martin provided an update by informing the Commission that the times for this event will be from 2:30 - 3:30 pm on Wednesdays every other week. This will make the program 6 weeks. The location is still being found and the Galt United Fellowship Hall will notify their availability soon, the Galt Place has not yet gotten back on their availability. There will be a graduation party for the end of the program and the overall budget would be $200 - $350 dollars. The Commissioners next steps are to find seniors who are willing to commit creating a flyer. 13. Community Project: Helping Adults with English Commissioner Cuevas and Commissioner Gonzalez provided and update by informing the Commission that they have not been able to start. They are going to start this program after the December holidays. Their schedule for the week is to help on Mondays and Wednesdays. 14. Galt Herald Newspaper This item was tabled as Commissioner Stalians was not prepared to present. 15. Galt Herald Editorial Article Subcommittee members will report on upcoming editorial topics. Commissioner Yebra and Commissioner Gonzalez will write articles about what their different cultures do during Christmas. Commissioner Rivas will write an article about Man on the Street asking people about some of their Christmas traditions at Galt High. Commissioner Franco will work on an art article at Galt High. The Subcommittee also said they are trying to expand and have more people join who are interested. F. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS None G. AROUND THE HORN GIVE YOUR GRATITUDE Commissioner Cuevas thanks Commissioner Gonzalez, Commissioner Ramos, and Adult Mentor Gordon for their help on team building ideas. Adult Mentor Gordon thanked the Commission for being more interactive during the meeting. Adult Mentor Klotz thanks the Commission for their ideas with the Climate Change Action Plan presentation. Commissioner Rodriguez thanks Adult Mentor Collier for her time and effort with the strengths testing. The Commission also had a discussion on how to improve their ways of contacting one another and knowing others availability. ADJOURNMENT: Chair Gonzalez adjourned the meeting at 8:01 PM.
