CITY OF GALT GALT YOUTH COMMISSION Meeting Minutes, August 5, 2019 Meeting held in City Chambers/Community Room 380 CIVIC DRIVE GALT, CALIFORNIA A. CALL MEETING TO ORDER: John Gordon, Adult Mentor, called the meeting to order at 6:01P.M in the City Chambers. B. ROLL CALL: Adult Mentors Present: Collier, Gordon, Klotz, Lampson Members Absent: Cross Youth Members Present: Akers (arrived at 6:07pm), Cuevas Murillo, Hemenover (arrived at 6:09pm), Kunze, Martin, Mejia, Neuburger, Rivas, Robles, Stalians Members Absent: None C. PUBLIC COMMENT: Xitlalic Martinez from Sacramento Works overviewed the America’s Job Center of California (AJCC) program as well as the services they provide at their resource center that helps youth 16-24 years old gets jobs. Beverly Cooper and three teens representing the Galt Teen Center requested support from the Galt Youth Commission and invited commissioners to attend their September 23rd Community Design Workshop at the Chabolla Center. Barbara Payne representing the Galt Beautification Committee requesting support from the Commission on their Earth Day event which is happening on April 18, 2020. She invited commissioners to attend their planning committee meetings which are happening on the first Thursday of every month at the Chabolla Center. D. PRESENTATIONS: Frank Pisi, Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE), presented an awareness/action campaign that would partner the Youth Commission and SCOE related to the 2020 US Census. The campaign would engage teachers and students from both high schools and the middle school to get the word out. SCOE would provide resources and the Commission would implement an outreach plan. Pisi stated the official kick off would start on September 30th with an adult mentor meeting. A region wide Youth Engagement Summit would occur on November 2nd which would bring various leadership groups together and share their project ideas. Commission took a short recess and resumed the meeting in the Community Room. E. REGULAR BUSINESS: 1. GYC Retreat Follow up: Maintaining Motivation GYC Alumni Kailah Ramos facilitated a discussion to gather feedback on the retreat. 2. Officer Elections The Commission took action to elect the following officers: Chair – Carolina Cuevas Murillo Vice Chair – Ashley Rivas Secretary – Genevieve Akers Treasurer – Gabe Kunze Publicity – Elena Neuburger Fundraising – Betsy Robles Sgt. Of Arms – Riley Hemenover Moved: C. Cuevas Murillo Second: R. Hemenover Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 3. Approval of the Minutes for July 1, 2019 The Commission approved the minutes. Moved: J. Martin Second: G. Kunze Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 4. Treasurer’s Report Adult Mentor Gordon reported that there no change in the account. He noted that he’s continuing to work with the City Clerk’s office to reconcile the balance in the GYC account. 5. National Night Out Commissioners Akers, Kunze and Cuevas Murillo summarized the community service projects that will be occurring simultaneously at Meadowview Park, Marian O. Lawrence Library and the Galt Community Park. The commission took action to approve a budget not to exceed $100. Moved: A. Rivas Second: B. Robles Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 6. Kevin Tonn Fun Run Update Item was tabled. 7. Sacramento County Office of Education Civic Engagement Project After reviewing Mr. Pisi’s presentation, the Commission took action to adopt it as a Galt Youth Commission project for 2019-20. Moved: C. Murillo Cuevas Second: E. Neuburger Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 Commissioners Mejia, Robles and Hemenover volunteered to serve as leads for this project. 8. Galt Sesquicentennial Project On behalf of Vice Mayor Farmer, Adult Mentor Collier provided an overview of the Galt Sesquicentennial and the City Council’s request to participate in the event. The commission took action to approve participation. Moved: J. Mejia Second: G. Kunze Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 Commissioner Martin volunteered to serve as the lead for this event. 9. Community Projects for 2019-20 The following three projects were discussed: art exhibit, adopting a street/clean up and senior tech project. Commissioner Akers and Rivas provided some conceptual ideas on a potential art exhibit. More information is expected to be shared at the next meeting. Commissioner Cuevas Murillo discussed the idea of adopting a street or doing some type of clean-up project. A poll around the room demonstrated support of the idea. Commissioner Cuevas Murillo will be connecting with the Beautification Committee to better understand if this project will overlap the work they’re already doing. Commissioner Martin provided information to continue the Senior Tech project which began last spring. The commission took action to adopt it as a Galt Youth Commission project for 2019-20. Moved: C. City Council Update Council Member Lampson reminded commissioners of National Night Out as well as farmer’s markets that will be occurring on the weekend. 11. September Galt Youth Commission Meeting The commission took action to move the September meeting to September 9th. Moved: G. Kunze Second: J. Martin Ayes: 10 Nays: 0 Abstain: 0 12. Future Agenda Items Future agenda items include editorials and police chief’s council. 13. Around the Horn/Give Your Gratitude Adult Mentors commended the candidates running for officer positions on their courage for running for their respective positions and having coming prepared with a speech.
