MINUTES OF THE GALVESTON CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2022, 2:00 PM
VIRTUAL MEETING VIA ZOOM
I. DECLARATION OF QUORUM AND CALL MEETING TO ORDER
a. With a quorum present the meeting was called to order at 2:02 PM by
Chair Kathleen DiNatale. Present:, Pat Jakobi, Sherrill Hilton, Trey Click, Nick
Barbee, Jan Collier, Mary Longoria, Michael Woody. Absent: Ken Shelton. For the
City: Megan Pierce, Barbara Sanderson, Marissa Barnett. Guest: Thomas
Singleton from Vision Galveston.
b. Review of Minutes: Minutes for January regular meeting were reviewed. Trey
moved they be accepted and approved, Nick seconded; approval was
unanimous.
c. Word on the Street: Trey Click gave an update on the work that has been done
to repair and relight the downtown Mardi Gras arch. He reported that the
Rosenberg Library will be holding an exhibit of the original sketches and models
for the arches at some time in the future. Pat Jakobi announced that the
Galveston Art League’ s Winter Juried Show is on exhibit through the month and
that the Galveston Island Nature Tourism Council is holding an art and writing
competition associated with their annual FeatherFest for students grades 1-8
with a theme of “Welcome to Bird City.” Sherrill Hilton announced that there will
be a one-day Galveston Island Film Festival of the selected films from 2020 and
2021 at Moody Gardens on April 9 and that submissions are being accepted until
June for the 2022 two-day festival that will return in October.
d. There were no public comments.
II. REPORTS
a. Chair’ s Update: The Z Krewe’ s application for their Mardi Gras street art was
approved at the January 27th City Council meeting. The Red Light Roasters has
submitted an application for a fence and sidewalk mural. The application was
unanimously approved and will be sent to the City Council for their February 24
meeting. Megan shared a copy of the new permit which has been issued to the Z
Krewe and there was a general discussion of the permitting process.
b. Marissa Barnett gave an update on outreach efforts to date for the current
request for proposals to the Arts Grant Program. A film video about the program
is anticipated to be up on the City website later this week. She also went over
planned activities for the future prior to the deadline on March 31 and asked for
suggestions of completed public art from other locations to use as examples.
Nick will provide information on the small public art grants program in Houston.
He and Michael Woody will work on a guest column that incorporates examples
of current Galveston recipients. Michael also suggested that he and Nick work
with Vision Galveston on a series of blogs highlighting current public art
activities.
III. DISCUSSION AND ACTION ITEMS
a. Thomas Singleton discussed ways that he and Vision Galveston could work with
the Commission in promoting public arts in the city. He focused on plans for
creative placemaking,” specifically as relates to adding art to the redesign of
Jones Park (71st and Avenue S). Nick expressed his desire to create art that
engages with the community that the park serves.
b. Trey suggested that the Commission should consider asking the City for more
money for cultural arts to move such suggestions forward. He also gave a thank
you to Barbara Sanderson for her work in improving the 25th Street medium.
IV. Adjournment at 2:46 PM: Nick Barbee moved to adjourn the meeting; Trey Click
seconded the motion; vote was unanimous.
