2018 4th of July Committee
City Hall
Present:
Jenna Kunde Ann Deuser Eric Zentner Steve Schmelzling
Jill Kastner Jessica Ballweg Bobbie Hughes Sarah Acker
Ann Markuson Hope Liu Tom Cinealis Robin Benedon
Sgt. Mike Morris of Glendale P.D.
The meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance.
The committee unanimously approved the minutes of the May 17 Glendale Fourth of July meeting.
Children’s Parade:
Ann Markuson said that Marty Hersh is sponsoring gift bags. Ann Deuser will give Ann Markuson
Frisbees to give out with the gift bags (they may not fit in the bags). Mayor Kennedy is kicking off the
Children’s Parade. Amy Barlament will be running things at Parkway, and she can talk to the media about the
parade. The Zimmerman’s will hand out the gift bags and ice cream to the kids at the end of the parade route.
Parade:
Shawn would like the committee to approve purchase of cones for parade staging. There was talk about
the expense of this and the difficulty arising from the different sizes of parade acts. There was objection to
cones because they’re larger and heavier, so would take more time to set up. We use flags that stick in the
ground now. Tom suggested making numbered flags with large numbers that can be put on fiberglass poles.
Steve could print and laminate the flags. Jessica said she’d talk to Shawn about this. Committee Volunteers for
the parade should be at City Hall at 9am. Committee members not needed at Kletzsch Park are requested to
volunteer for the parade and be at City Hall at 9:00 am. Ann D. needs a section marked off for First Bank
Financial Centre, and they will give that space to the Nicolet Band families. We need to mark this off on July 3.
Eric said we should get DPW to do this so it looks official and people don’t just ignore it. Ann D. will contact
DPW, and Eric said that if they do this on 7/3, he will work with DPW on the location to ensure that volunteers
can still get to the grass west of the reserved area, which is where we park.
Jessica told us Jesse Ritka is no longer doing a live weather update from the grounds. Brian Cramp of
Real Milwaukee will be there. Jessica is waiting to see if the veterans will be up for doing anything after the
parade and is still working on a few parade acts.
Parade Vehicles:
Tom said that Mary Lynn has about 14 vehicles. Hope said she has a VW Thing her husband may drive
in the parade. She will tell Jill if they’re going to be in the parade.
Stages:
Sarah said both stages are booked.
Community stage: 12:15 – 2:00 pm Talent Show; Rubik’s Cube Champion 2:00 pm; Half Twisted Half
Knot (stage show 3 – 4 pm and then works from his van after from 4 - 5). Bingo is 4-6 pm.

Main stage: The Mayor’s welcome is at noon. Digby (Jazz Band) is 12:15-2:00. Pat McCurdy plays
2:30-5 with a ½-hour break, then Oil Can Harry from 5:30 – 9:00. Jenna will go on stage at 5:25 and
thank the sponsors and then turn the mic over to Gus from First Financial Bank.
Talent Show:
We only have about three entries so far. Spread the word. We need more entries. Mr. Theine cannot
emcee the talent show. Donna Allison (from Parkway School) is able to emcee the Talent Show.
Layout:
Jenna asked Tom about bean-bag toss. It starts at 2:30, and there are 4 “courts.” We will have the
tournament on the southwest baseball diamond. There was talk of setting it up for kids in the kid activity area,
but then we would have to staff it, and people would be walking in the line of fire, so it was decided that we
wouldn’t do this. We are keeping the dunk tank where we put it at the last meeting, but we might move it a little
bit west.
Grounds:
Eric reported that he picked up the supplies Home Depot donated in order to bring the south power panel
to the middle of the south edge of the mega tent. Tomorrow he is hoping to meet Shawn at DPW in order to
check the panels and to modify the food vendor panel so that the ice cream vendor does not need to use his
generator.
Food Vendors:
Bobbie called Dickie’s, but they cannot join this year. We have: Rolling Cones, Chippies, Wisconsin
fried Cheese Curds, Yum-Yum’s ice cream, Sprecher, Boy Scout Corn and Water. We are not going to try to
get more food vendors. Jenna will let Ann D. know how much cake we need. Eric mentioned that we have no
scientific way of knowing how much cake we need, that we have always given away all the cake we had.
Kids Games and activities:
Hope said the games and activities are all set. She’s just waiting for parking passes to give them. We
don’t know of any activities that need more than the 10’ x 10’ tent space. Steve reminded us that we need two
canopies for shade for the volunteers staffing the bounce house.
Booklet/fundraising:
Ann D. reported that she and Tom have raised almost $22,000 for the booklet. Shawn is sending out
invoices. They are still waiting to hear from Erehwon. Volunteers will get booklets to distribute at Parkway
School on Saturday, June 23rd. We need more volunteers for booklet distribution and committee members and
friends/family are encouraged to help.
Shirts:
Tom brought shirts. If you signed up for a shirt, see Tom after the meeting to get yours.
Documents:
Steve mentioned that if you have artifacts to post, you can put it in the drop box. Robin suggested that
we include an hour-by-hour schedule on the website. Ann D. pointed out that there’s a lot of info on the Fourth-
of-July section of welcometoglendale.com
Steve suggested that, along with the signup for volunteering, it would be nice to have a sign-up to
volunteer to lend equipment (like chairs, canopies, etc.). Eric cautioned that we don’t have the staff to watch
borrowed items, so we can’t be responsible for lost or damaged items.

Budget:
Jenna said the budget is looking good thanks to Tom, Ann & Shawn’s great fundraising work. Ann M.
asked what the children’s parade budget is. Jessica said it is $250.
Promotion:
Ann and Jessica are working with the media who will be there on July 4th. Ann is also working on
promotion including designing the booklet, creating a flyer, developing 4th of July content on the Welcome to
Glendale website, ensuring we are listed in all 4th of July listings in the area, and social media around our Talent
Show, volunteering and the event. All committee members are asked to share social media and other posts
about the Talent Show, Volunteering and the 4th of July in general. Ann handed out flyers for us to post in the
community. Jenna said that we want six banner-type road signs to promote the event. Tom asked if we could get
one on Silver Spring and Port Washington. Sgt. Morris suggested we ask one of the businesses there to let us
post it on their property. Jenna will try to get that permission. The others will be posted either on Green Tree or
the Parkway.
Parking:
Sgt. Morris asked if we have a volunteer policing the dam lot to make sure only handicapped people
park there. If so, we should give this person’s phone # to Sgt. Morris. Jill mentioned that last year parade
volunteers were “lent” to traffic control, and drivers ignored them. We should have volunteers specifically
earmarked for traffic control.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm
Next Meeting: The next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 19th, at 6:30 at Kletzsch Park, weather permitting.
