City of Glendale Official Minutes – Music in the Glen Meeting January 9, 2019 Meeting was called to order at 3:37 p.m. Roll Call: Present: JoAnn Shaw, Chair; Members; Rita Radke, Robert Radke, Lee Carey Johnson and Tristann Rieck. Absent: None Staff Present: Anna Voigt, Deputy Clerk/Treasurer Guest: Ann Deuser, Executive Director of Welcome to Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau. Open Meeting Notice. In accordance with the Open Meeting Law, the local news media was advised on Thursday, January 4, 2019, of the date of this meeting; that the agenda was posted on the official bulletin board of City Hall, the Glendale Police Department, and the North Shore Library; that copies of the agenda were made available to the general public in the Municipal Building and the Police Department, and those persons who requested, were sent copies of the agenda. Adoption of Minutes of meeting held on October 10, 2018 Motion was made by Mr. Radke, seconded by Ms. Carey Johnson, approving the minutes held on October 10, 2018. Introduce new member, Tristann Rieck Ms. Shaw introduced Tristann Rieck, the newest member of the committee to replace Carole Pierner. Ms. Rieck is the Store Owner of Brass Bell Music Store in Glendale. Ms. Rieck has experience putting together shows and connections to musicians in the area. Everyone welcomed Ms. Rieck to the committee. Review Kids from Wisconsin Contract Ms. Shaw stated that Kids from Wisconsin contract needed to be completed. Mr. Radke confirmed with Homestead High School in Mequon and booked the auditorium for June 26. Mr. Radke confirmed there was Air Conditioning available at the school. Ms. Rieck asked if A/C was a requirement from Kids from Wisconsin. Mr. Radke replied last year at Whitefish Bay High School it wasn’t safe with how much moisture was on the floor. The floor became slippery. Ms. Rieck asked how much the Homestead auditorium would cost. Mr. Radke said it will be $800. Mr. Radke mentioned that a parent will be paying for the Kids from Wisconsin workshop before the show. Ms. Radke stated that the workshop before the show may bring in younger kids than previous years. Ms. Rieck asked how long the show will be. Mr. Radke responded 2 hours. Ms. Rieck stated we are paying for 4 hours. Mr. Radke responded 4 hours is needed for set up and take down. Mr. and Ms. Radke will be paying for the rental and the food for Kids from Wisconsin. Ms. Dueser thanked the Radkes and stated she will look for a sponsor for the remanding $3,000 for the show. Mr. Radke stated that as soon as the contract is submitted the Kids from Wisconsin can start their marketing. Ms. Deuser asked if the committee would be putting Music in the Glen inserts into the Kids from Wisconsin booklet. The committee agreed that would still be done. Ms. Dueser asked if that could be added to the contract. Ms. Shaw asked if Mr. Radke would be the tech support. Mr. Radke stated he would be there and to add there will be no ticket sales. Ms. Shaw asked Ms. Deuser about the press kit. Ms. Deuser stated that the press kit can be sent to Ms. Shaw. Ms. Deuser wants Kids from Wisconsin to print the sponsors name on the posters. Ms. Shaw asked the committee if there was anything else that needed to be added to the contract. The committee approved the contract to be sent to Kids from Wisconsin. Discuss Musical Options/Genres Ms. Deuser asked what show in the season Kids from Wisconsin will be playing. Ms. Shaw stated it will be the 2nd show. The first show will be at the park to let everyone know that the 2nd show will be at Homestead High School. Mr. Radke stated he was trying to get in contact with someone from Nicolet High School of Glen Hills Middle School. He wanted to ask them if they would like to do a spring concert at the park. Ms. Rieck stated she would reach out to someone at the schools to see if they are interested. Ms. Shaw stated if the committee was interested she would like to see Music in the Glen’s first show be a dedication to the Veterans Memorial. Ms. Carey Johnson agreed it would be a good idea. Mr. Radke stated that the group Ladies Must Swing will cost $1,500 and had all Wednesdays open. Ms. Deuser said she looked over all of the bands that were proposed at last meeting. She rated them based on their website, facebook page, and other social media following. Marketing from the musical acts would help bring more people to the concerts. Ms. Deuser stated that Ladies Must Swing got a thumbs up from her. Mr. Radke stated he would contact them and set the date for June 19. Ms. Shaw wants the Ladies must Swing to know that there will be a Veteran’s salute. Mr. Radke stated Jack Forbes Wilson had no web presents, but has a big audience in the area. He is $500 and could play either July 10 or 17. Ms. Deuser asked if there was going to be a show with Broadway songs. Looking from a marketing standpoint Broadway tunes everyone enjoys, and people can dance and sing along. Ms. Radke stated that yes there could be. Ms. Rieck asked if any of the senior living homes brought buses to the concerts. Ms. Carey Johnson stated that a few use to, but they don’t anymore. Mr. Radke stated that Neil Diamond tribute band had two different shows to offer. One show was singing to a CD track and the other option was with a backup band. Mr. Radke suggested having the option with a backup band. Dave Dorner is a resident of Glendale that would like to sponsor the show. Mr. Radke asked the committee for the classical night if everyone was interested in having Concord Chamber Orchestra back for $700. Ms. Rieck stated that they always bring a good crowd with 45 people preforming. Ms. Radke stated that the first year there was an issue with lighting and suggested keeping them in the beginning of the schedule. Ms. Rieck stated that most acts will bring additional light if they know there is an issue ahead of time. Mr. Radke also suggested Lakeshore Symphonic Band as a classical choice for $500. Ms. Shaw stated that Concord Chamber Orchestra is a local band. Ms. Rieck offered to check which dates they were available. Ms. Dueser stated that Chicken Wire Empire had good marketing, so did Pat McCurdy, but it didn’t seem kid friendly, but can maybe adapt their performance. Ms. Dueser asked about Copper Box. Mr. Radke stated that they were a jazz band. Ms. Dueser asked if there were going to be any country bands like Rebel Grace. Mr. Radke stated that they did a show 2 years ago and it wasn’t a big turnout. Ms. Dueser asked if there could be a show geared toward kids. She found two bands Fox and Branch and Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals. There are a few sponsors that would be interested in sponsoring some kid shows. Ms. Rieck asked what age group it would include. Ms. Dueser stated probably 10 and under. The playground is always packed with kids during the show. Ms. Carey Johnson stated that it could introduce a different crowd and maybe it could be a daytime show. Ms. Rieck asked if the time for the show was always 7 PM – 9 PM. Mr. Radke stated that they have played with the time in the past and 7 PM – 9 PM works for everyone. People have time to come home from work and eat dinner. Mr. Radke suggested narrowing down acts and dates. Ms. Carey Johnson stated that Kids from Wisconsin was going to be June 26 and Ladies must Swing will be June 19. Kay Stiefel & Jack Forbes Wilson will be July 10. Chicken Wire Empire could be July 17 or 24. Ms. Dueser stated Concord Chamber Orchestra and Neil Diamond tribute band would need dates. Ms. Shaw stated Neil Diamond tribute band could have whichever date Concord Chamber Orchestra couldn’t do. Ms. Dueser suggested a battle of the bands. Mr. Radke and Ms. Rieck stated that they have done battle of the bands before and there wouldn’t be enough time. Battle of the bands looks good on TV but it takes a lot of time for set up and take down for each performance. Mr. Radke asked if anyone was interested in having Groove Therapy. Ms. Rieck stated that they were Rock/Pop. Mr. Radke suggested having Groove Therapy or Copper Box. Ms. Rieck suggested Whiskey Belles. Ms. Dueser stated Boomer Nation was at Root Beer Bash last year for $700. Ms. Carey Johnson asked about Pat McCurdy. Ms. Rieck stated that he draws middle-age group and maybe to move him to the middle of the schedule. Ms. Shaw stated that the year could end with the Neil Diamond tribute band. Each member took a few acts to contact and get dates they were available. Discuss Fundraising Options Ms. Deuser stated that she plans on selling ads again and she is working on season packages. The season package may include a parking pass for the show and a few other items. Mr. Radke brought in a slot that was used in the past on a sign on Milwaukee River Parkway. Mr. Radke asked if the sign should come back. Ms. Carey Johnson stated that it was great exposure. Mr. Radke added that it’s not hard to create the slots for the sign. Set Next Meeting Date The committee scheduled the next meeting for February 6, 2019 at 3:30 PM at The Richard E. Maslowski Community Park. Old/New Business There was no old or new business. Adjournment Motion was made by Mr. Radke, and seconded by Ms. Carey Johnson to adjourn the meeting at 4:55 PM until February 6, 2019 at 3:30 PM.
