Citizens’ Unity Commission March 10, 2016 6:00pm Community Development Conference Room, 5th floor, City Hall Attendance: Pat Leary, Anne Andrews, Ellen Shackelford, Luretta Ray, Mei Stukes, Ruthann Kellum, Jodie James, Burley Gardner, Enrique Zapatero, Ray Smith, Deena Franklin, Sharmane Baynard Staff: Steve Bond, Wanda Ferrell Guest: Alice Callahan from Neighborhood Commission Call to Order - Pat 6:10 Introductions: First name, last name and what you want for you next birthday SEND MINUTES NEXT WEEK Committee Reports  Creative Arts - Jodie and Joshua  Wonderful breakfast at Crown Plaza  Having collaborations with art agencies from breakfast  April 13th - Meeting to move forward with art agencies  Talking to marketing to discuss Facebook and getting info on CUC website  Taking recommendations for location to have formal black tie awards ceremony  Youth Outreach - Sharmane  No report  2016 Unity Awards - Mary  June 9, 2016 – American Theatre  Please everyone make a nomination  Send nomination form link to Jasmine Bryson  Look for host for the program  Sign up for awards assignment - April agenda  Send nomination form to Steve Bond  Movie & Mic - Luretta  Barbershop: The Next Cut - Youth opportunity, AMC  Get youth involvement  AMC will cost about $2,000 for 150 seats  Could we ask youth to pay  Could we announce the location a week before  Trying to get a sponsor  Try to get popcorn with tickets at Cinebistro  Get individuals to sponsor a child  Have a question session prior to start of movie  Month of Peace April 2016 - Sharmane  No report  Discuss merging YAG with Youth Commission  Wanted a YAG group to focus on Diversity topics  Ask you to help with our focused activities  Ask CUC to be a subset of the Youth Commission  Wait for new Director to see what works and what changes need to be made  CUC & CEAC need to meet and chat  Anne will help Sharmane with Peace Month Planning  Black Taboo as a movie for the month Peace  HU said that location and discussion could be held at the university  In NN it was on a Saturday and was split into groups, answers were given in larger group and then split up again for discussion  Peace - People Encouraging Another Common Equality  Peace Walk  Hug it Out  Peace Art Important as Committee Chairs to have monthly meetings to plan events in your group Table Sharmane letting Chair position go for Youth Committee Have a deadline for all committees to submit info for programs for planning and budget for the year  Community Partnerships - Deena  Neighborhood commission meeting 2nd Monday @5:00  Share information with Neighborhood Commission  All Commissioners are on the website  Events with neighborhoods to include Diversity  CUC participating with PTA  Have neighborhood walks for Peace Month  Maybe 2 or 3 for the month  Have a lunch and learn or something to get the 2 commissions together and please have food  2016 International Children's Festival - Pat  April 16th, 10:00am - 5:00pm, Mill Point Park  Sponsorship of the 2016 International Children’s Festival  Booth attendance sign-up sheet  Mandalas stickers for coloring and something for everyone to walk away with  Recruitment for Youth Advisory Group - Sharmane  Youth committee discussion tabled Review - Luretta  February 4, 2016 - Fort Monroe Theater - Topic: “Race and Politics”  February 13th, “Deep River: The Marian Anderson Journey” o Great event o Reception before the event  February 25th - “Girls in the Band” o Sent invite to middle and high school band instructors to let their band student aware of the event o Not a lot of student but had a very nice turnout Action Items  Sponsorship of the 2016 International Children’s Festival - Wanda o Motion to sponsor the ICF, Ruthann 2nd the motion  Call for a vote - all in favor, none opposed or abstained  Bags and supplies will be brought to April meeting to be stuffed during the meeting  Deena will pick up supplies on Friday afternoon and deliver to festival on Saturday morning at 9:30 New Business Announcements Burley - Fort Eustis -  Women’s History month Observance at Fort Eustis, will email Wanda details to distribute Ellen - People with Disabilities Committee - No report  Ellen will participate in the Children’s Festival Colloquium: Intersectionality of Diversity  March 11th @ John Tyler Community College Getting closer to interviews for the Director and hopefully within the next month Adjourn - Pat 7:45 **Upcoming Events WHRO - Community Conversations on Race  April 5, 2016 - Fort Monroe Theater - Topic: “Race and Religion” Next meeting April 14, 2016 @6:00pm
