FULL COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Hampton Clean City Commission September 10, 2019 ~ 3:30pm Board Members Present: Ryan Adams; Barb Abraham; Jackie Cannan; Cris Grady; Wendy Iles; Gayle Mooney; Jamie Osso Also Present: George Curran; Linda Curtis; Diallo Toure; Jim Williams; Debbie Blanton; Cris Ausink, C’Faison Harris Opening Business Welcome and Time Sheet: Ryan Adams opened the meeting. Roll Call & Protocol: Roll call conducted; quorum was present. Ryan announced that Will Kotheimer resigned from the board due to other commitments. Approval of August Minutes: Motion to approve August minutes as amended offered by Jackie Cannan, seconded by Gayle Mooney. Minutes approved as amended. City Council: No report City Attorney’s Office: No report Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services: No report Public Works: No report 1 Financial Report: Financial data was distributed. Ideas and Projects from August Minutes None New Business None Discussion Items 2019 Volunteer Recognition Event: Wendy Iles and Ryan have selected the guest speaker, Jaylen Wilson, owner of Salvage Boyz in Downtown Hampton. Jaylen started his business at the age of 16, but he’s been upcycling since the age of 13. Jamie Osso stated that his name sounds familiar and asked if he was a Hampton student. Jim Williams will be this year’s host and master of ceremony. The theme of the event is “Treasuring Our Volunteers” and Melany Libby, a supporter of HCCC, has agreed to do the centerpieces – which will be ON LOAN. Ryan stated that more members are welcome to become a part of the planning committee and be at the next meeting scheduled at HCCC for Monday, September 23 at 1pm. Door prizes and swag items are being discussed, with a letter requested to provide to local area businesses for donations. 2019 Holiday Dinner: Jim is coordinating the December 10 holiday dinner and has checked several locations, such as the County Grill, Red Lobster (which will also cater and can do buffet style), Olive Garden, Dead Rise (which cannot accommodate), and Surf Rider (which takes no reservations). Final decision will be made at the October 8 board meeting. Plans for Retreat 2020-2023: C’Faison Harris stated that Debbie Blanton asked that any ideas/suggestions on topics or areas for discussion be emailed to her prior to the October 8 meeting. The retreat is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 10am-4pm at Sandy Bottom Nature Park. . The Hampton Clean City Commission works to improve and enhance the physical environment of Hampton through beautification, solid waste management education, coastal awareness activities, and litter abatement programs; educates citizens; and encourages their participation. As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., we share the philosophy that each of us has a responsibility for enhancing our community environment. 20190910 Appointed Member Reports Bee City USA: Barb Abraham reported that Bee City participated in the September 5 GroGreen Expo. Statistics showed that 10 volunteers provided 37 man-hours to the event, and they were able to collect 13 new letters of support for the initiative, which brings the total to 118. T-Shirts with the Bee City logo will be done for $1 by Jan Spencer, and a sign-up sheet was passed around. Another fundraiser, Painting with A Twist, was announced for October 11, beginning at 6:30pm. Wendy and Barb will select the artwork to be used. Bee City will also participate in the October 12 Fall Festival at Bluebird Gap Farm. Wendy said volunteers were needed for the beer pull on October 5 and 12, with 4-hour shifts. Wendy will send an informational email for distribution. Tents will be available for this event. Linda Curtis will check on the status of the Bee City Resolution. Barb to send the proposed resolution to Linda. Beautification Committee: Jamie Osso reported that three yards were selected as winners for September with all three exhibiting the required ten characteristics of a beautiful yet sustainable landscape. Winners were Reginald Wallen on Mallory Street, Cleo Parker on Jay Sykes Court, and George Curran of Glascow Way. The yard of the year winner was also selected; to be announced at the October 8 meeting. Fund-Raising Committee: Ryan made a motion to dissolve the ad hoc committee. Wendy seconded. Motion approved. Hampton Community Gardens: Wendy announced that Community Gardens will receive a Trex bench due to the plastic bag- recycling program. On September 19, a workshop on composting will be held beginning at 6:30pm. On October 19, there will be a fall cleanup at Buckroe Community Garden. She added that gardening space is still available at Buckroe, Phoebus, and North Phoebus. Wendy also made a pitch to have the 2020 Community Gardens Conference held in Hampton and that is being seriously considered. She is working with the Hampton Visitors and Convention Bureau on the details, and is hoping that all will be finalized at the time the Marina Hotel is completed. This year’s event will be in Indiana 2 Groovin’ by the Bay: Chris Grady stated that the last event of the season was held at Mill Point Park. He noted that while Mill Point had more than 20 trash receptacles, there were only 3 at Buckroe Beach. Chris gave kudos to the 7 volunteers who were successful in picking up 10 bags of trash and more than 350 cigarette ends. Standing Committee Reports Clean & Green Workplaces: Jim noted the committee is planning the next recycling event for November, again at Goodwill Resources on Saville Row. He added that Shred It no longer does events of this nature. He tried to get AAA to sponsor, but they will only do so on their property, which is not large enough. Jim will also check to see if HPRLS will sponsor the event. Jim announced that this quarter’s Clean Business winner was Fuller’s Raw Bar, who will receive their award at a special presentation on site on September 10, with board members being encouraged to attend. It was suggested that local businesses be recognized and Jackie Cannan asked that area fast food facilities be asked to participate on the committee. Hampton Waterways Restoration Project: Jamie thanked Chris Ausink, Melany & Gary Libby and Melany’s mother for volunteering at the Arts in the Park event on September 7. There were more than 500 visitors and the children’s activities were well received. Litter and Recycling Awareness: The next Community Appearance Liter Index will be Wednesday, October 9, 9am-5pm, and the School Appearance Litter Index will be Saturday, October 26. August Adopt-A-Spot cleanup statistics are attached to agenda packet. School Pride in Action: The first meeting of the school year will be Wednesday, October 2. Master Gardeners: The Fall Plant Sale will be at Bluebird Gap Farm, Saturday, September 28, 9am-12noon. Master Naturalists: No report Virginia Cooperative Extension: No report. Members encouraged to send condolences. It was announced that former HCCC Intern Kendall Crawford, now a Rhodes Scholar, is currently with an environmental faith-based group.
