FULL COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Hampton Clean City Commission January 14, 2020 ~ 3:30pm Board Members Present: Ryan Adams, Barbara Abraham, Jackie Cannan, Chris Grady, Gayle Mooney, Jamie Osso Also Present: Dave McCauley, Kay Sumner, Jason Mitchell, Brian Dobbins, Sherry Johnson, Jim Williams, Debbie Blanton, Cris Ausink, C’Faison Harris Opening Business Welcome and Time Sheet: Ryan Adams opened the meeting. Roll Call & Protocol: Roll call conducted; quorum was present. Guest Sherry Johnson, Langley Environmentalist, shared in the introductions and discussion. Hampton Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services Annual Report: Director, Dave McCauley, presented the agency’s annual report, which included its many subdivisions, such as Administration, Recreation Facilities, Parks Maintenance, Golf Courses, Clean City Commission, and the History Museum. He noted that HPRLS now has a monthly newsletter to keep staff informed of agency matters. He also encouraged members to attend the January 28 Community Improvement Plan and to look at the survey results. Dave then made a special award presentation to agency staff members for their service: Debbie Blanton, 20 years, C’Faison Harris 10 years, and Christine Ausink 5 years. November Retreat Overview: Chair Ryan Adams provided an overview of the November retreat. Ryan stated he thought the retreat to be successful and that he learned many new things about the commission’s history and it’s past, present and future goals. In 1 addition, he developed a greater understanding of the agency’s affiliation with Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the VA Department of Environmental Equality, and its connection to other city agencies. He feels that a Town Hall collaboration with Hampton City Leadership would present an opportunity to educate Hampton citizens on important issues. He also noted that Hampton may be a hot spot for future climate and environmental forums. In discussing the agency’s mission, HCCC values its volunteers, celebrates the accomplishments of its volunteers, that community involvement is high on its list, and that its volunteers are passionate about Hampton’s waterways. Debbie Blanton also distributed and explained a handout on the retreat discussion, and asked that members submit additional ideas and/or comments to her. Public Works: Jason Mitchell discussed reconstruction of the James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe Beach, which was damaged by a barge late last year. He stated that construction should be complete within 30-45 days. He also advised members of the beach revitalization due to erosion and the team effort taking place between HPRLS and HPW. Project/Program/Initiative Planning Beautification & Community Improvement: Barb Abraham announced that Bee City USA has been approved by City Council. Its next meeting is January 16, and members were encouraged to request to be a member of the organization’s Facebook group. Jim Williams announced that the November 22 recycling & collection event sponsored by the Clean & Green Workplaces Committee and Goodwill Resource Center went well, but did not have as many vendors as was initially expected. He stated that the Hampton will host the First Quarter VA Peninsula Clean Business Forum on Wednesday, February 26. A venue and a speaker are to be determined. The next committee meeting will be January 21 at the Goodwill Resource Center. Jim also asked members to check out area businesses to see if they would like to be a part of the committee. The Hampton Clean City Commission works to improve and enhance the physical environment of Hampton through beautification, solid waste management education, coastal awareness activities, and litter abatement programs; educates citizens; and encourages their participation. As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., we share the philosophy that each of us has a responsibility for enhancing our community environment. 20200114 Melany Libby noted that she will be conducting a class on “Seeding in Milk Jugs” for Community Gardens on January 18, Northampton Community Center, 10am-12noon, admission is free but pre-registration is required. Litter Prevention and Abatement: Debbie announced the following Tour de Trash “Express” events: January 15 – Landfill February 20 -Steam Plant March 11 – Compost Facility May 14 - Landfill A regular Tour de Trash is also scheduled for April 3. Community cleanups are also scheduled for January 17 (3pm) on Shell Road and January 18 (10am) along Ireland Street Discussion Items: Debbie mentioned a proposed collaboration with the Neighborhood Office and The Unity Commission for a meet and greet event. Debbie asked for a motion to proceed with the collaboration; Barb made the motion and Ryan seconded. The motion was approved.
