FULL COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Hampton Clean City Commission July 12, 2022 ~ 3:30pm Board Members Present: Jackie Cannan, Chair; Tim Richardson, Vice Chair; Chris Grady; Gayle Mooney; April Receveur, Alex Maness, Barbara Abraham; Ryan Adams (via Zoom) Also Present: Angela King, Asst. City Attorney; Linda & Robert Boone; Jim Williams; Dave McCauley (via Zoom); Jason Mitchell (Via Zoom); Wendy Iles; Courtney Worrall Absent: Councilman Chris Bowman; Grady McLean; C’Faison Harris; Cris Ausink Opening Business Welcome and Time Sheet: Chair Jackie Cannan called meeting to order, welcomed everyone and reminded all to sign in. Roll Call, Protocol, and Approval of Notes/Minutes: : Protocol was read. Roll was conducted and a quorum was present. April Receveur made a motion to approve the June minutes which was seconded by Alex Maness and unanimously approved. 1 Hampton City Council: No updates Hampton City Attorney: No updates Hampton Parks, Recreation, & Leisure Services: PRLS Director Dave McCauley announced the Parks & Recreation Master Plan meeting taking place July 12, 2022, 5-7pm, Rupert Sargent Building’s Veteran’s Conference Room, at 1 Franklin Street, in the Veteran’s Conference Room. Everyone is welcome. Hampton Public Works: PW Director Jason Mitchell said that Public works was in full gear with cutting grass and cleaning up the trash in the city. PW has made progress with removing Adopt-A-Spot signs for groups no longer participating in the program. They need more volunteers for litter cleanups. Litter is happening as fast as cleanups are completed. Financial Overview: Members reviewed the financial statement. Proposals, Discussion, Voting Items & Updates Staff member Wendy Iles let everyone know that volunteers are needed for the Clean City public outreach for the Buckroe Beach Farmer’s Market on Saturday, July 16. Board members are also needed to act as host and educators. The 2022 Volunteer Recognition will still be in person as long as the new COVID variant allows. Wendy would like to schedule a meeting before the end of July to make plans. Fall Retreat and Holiday Dinner will be discussed in August. Each committee please send minutes to Staff member Courtney Worrall after they have been approved. April made a motion to allow Ryan Adams to join the meeting via Zoom. The motion was seconded by Barbara Abraham and unanimously approved. Committee & Partner Updates Beautification: Gayle Mooney said nine judges reviewed three beautiful yards on July 11. Dr. Carolyn Jones was selected as July’s YARDS winner. Gayle shared that one of the homeowners asked if the YARDS committee could make a make any suggestions for their yard. The homeowner also asked about Master Gardeners and Clean City. The YARDS team doesn’t seek to give advice to homeowners about their yards, but maybe they can look to build on this homeowner’s energy and talk about this in 2023 as they prepare for the yards for next year. Bee City USA-Hampton: April Receveur shared that Bee City received $240 in donations for pollinator certification signs and received $395 from the June 25th plant donation outreach at the Buckroe Beach Farmers Market. The outreach was a great event and well-attended. The final Bee City webinar is July 21 at 7pm with Debbie Blanton speaking about pollinator trees. Clean & Green Workplaces: Jim Williams said that they are still looking for nominees for the Clean & Green business quarterly award. Talked about a hybrid lunch and learn to help educate people. Debbie is looking at previous winners to possibly nominate for an award. Jim shared that everyone is welcome to attend the next meeting on July 19, 2022 at 3:30p. 2 Community Gardens: Wendy shared that Community Gardens recently had two orientations. HCG is planning some changes which will be discussed with Dave in a meeting on July 14. Hampton Waterways Restoration Project: Linda Boone shared that they have been pretty busy in the month of June with lots of projects. She stated that the new HWRP banner is really nice. She also visited the Makerspace Open House at Fort Monroe on June 18 and they help people plan/make a project. As a partner with the City of Hampton, Linda spoke with Makerspace CEO Bo Turner about collaborating with Clean City on the Bluebird Gap Farm Trash Bash. Adam Newland at BBGF, Karen with VIMS and Linda did a shoreline assessment of Bluebird’s waterway. They are going to use what shoreline they have to educate the public about what a jewel the beautiful waterway is next to BBGF, especially being right next to the interstate. They have a cleanup at BBGF on July 16 to work on waterway and land. If anyone would like to contact Linda, her email is lindaboone13@yahoo.com. Litter & Recycling Awareness: No update . School Pride in Action: No updates VA Cooperative Extension: No updates Hampton VCE Master Gardeners: Gayle announced that a board meeting will take place July 13, with the next regular meeting being July 21. They have a plant sale coming up in October and are preparing for a new class in August. She would be able to advertise the events and seek volunteer assistance. Laura’s email is laura_marlowe@hotmail.com. Staff Reports: Wendy announced that the theme for 2022 volunteer recognition event is “Focus on the Future.” A speakers group is also being developed and those interested in speaking to groups and organization on different topics are welcome to join. A grant research committee is also being formed and a development meeting will be held July 26, 3:30-4:30 at the Clean City offices.
