FULL COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Hampton Clean City Commission February 14, 2023 ~ 3:30pm Board Members Present: Jackie Cannan, Chair; Tim Richardson, Vice Chair; Chris Grady; Gayle Mooney; April Receveur, Barbara Abraham; Grady McLean Also Present: Angela King, Asst. City Attorney; Linda & Robert Boone; Jim Williams; Dave McCauley (via Zoom);; Wendy Iles; Courtney Worrall; Cris Ausink Absent: Councilman Chris Bowman; C’Faison Harris; Alex Maness; Ryan Adams Opening Business Welcome and Time Sheet: Chair Jackie Cannan called meeting to order, welcomed everyone and reminded all to sign in. Roll Call, Protocol, and Approval of Notes/Minutes: Protocol was read. Roll was conducted and a quorum was present. Gayle made a motion to approve the January minutes as written, seconded by April and all approved. 1 Hampton City Council: No update Hampton City Attorney: No update Hampton Parks, Recreation, & Leisure Services: Mosaic Festival is coming up on April 22 at Mill Point Park. Dave sends a big thank you to Brandy Marks & the NoSleep Adopt-A-Spot group for their cleanup at Briarfield Park a couple of weeks ago. Hampton Public Works: No update Financial Overview: Members reviewed the financial statement. Proposals, Discussion, Voting Items & Updates • The Board retreat will be on March 14, 2023 from 9a-3p at Sandy Bottom Nature Park conference room. • Mosaic Festival is the Earth Day, International Children, and Hampton Heritage festivals all combined together. The date is April 22 from 10a-5p and volunteers are needed. Wendy is working on making cars from cardboard boxes for children to watch a short environmental film. • Trash Bash—Kecoughtan High School Students are composing a Seahorse (Rm 836), and they need green and blue plastic for the sculpture. Another class is making a Sea Turtle. HCCC is collecting #1,2 & 5 plastic for the sculpture. The Hampton Clean City Commission works to improve and enhance the physical environment of Hampton through beautification, solid waste management education, coastal awareness activities, and litter abatement programs; educates citizens; and encourages their participation. As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., we share the philosophy that each of us has a responsibility for enhancing our community environment. Committee & Partner Updates Beautification: YARDS training was on February 13 with 10 judges and another training is scheduled for March 6. The first Monday of April is when the judging begins. All Hampton houses are eligible for nomination and the front and back yards must be judged. Nominations can be done online through the link on the Clean City website. Bee City USA-Hampton: The last meeting was on January 19 and they are planning a pollinator garden at Bluebird Gap Farm. George Curran is working with the Hampton History Museum to help create a pollinator garden in the courtyard at the museum. Al Banwell is working on a refurbish of a bee hive at Bluebird Gap Farm. Next meeting is February 16 at 2:30pm. Clean & Green Workplaces: The committee presented CGW award to Mr. Alfred Stein at Pac N Mail and Vice Mayor Gray was able to attend the presentation. The Clean Business Forum 1 st Quarter Awards will be held in Hampton at the Sentara conference room on March 29. Community Gardens: No update Hampton Waterways Restoration Project: Clean up at Selendale recently was successful. Next meeting is March 8 at 6:30pm at the Fort Monroe Community Center. March 25 cleanup at Lake Hampton at 1pm. Also on March 25 will also have a kayak and shoreline cleanup at Bluebird Gap Farm. Litter & Recycling Awareness: No February meeting. There is two upcoming cleanups, February 25 near Fire 2 Station #6 meeting at Forest Elementary School and on March 4 near Fire Station #7 meeting at Syms Middle School. Both cleanups are from 10-11am. School Pride in Action: Focusing on School Earth Day events and will be doing an environmental art fair at Bluebird Gap Farm this year. Their next meeting is March 9 at 4:15pm. VA Cooperative Extension: No update Hampton VCE Master Gardeners: They will have a plant sale on May 6 at Bluebird Gap Farm. The plant sale is always a great event and Master Gardeners are available to speak with at the sale. VA Peninsula Master Naturalists: They are Bluebird Gap Farm every third Saturday from 9-11:30am. They will be monitoring the Bluebird population at the Bluebird Gap Farm bird boxes and are looking to add a few bird boxes. They have been asked to monitor the camellias near the cemetery at Bluebird Gap Farm. Looking at ways to share data collected on the camellias to share with the Master Gardeners. They will be starting a Tree Steward class in March for two months on Thursday evenings. Staff Reports: Wendy shared that HCCC has been getting a lot of requests for speaking engagements. If anyone would like to assist with working with the presentations Wendy created, please let her know. Northampton Community Connection Fair on April 29 and volunteers are needed, please contact Wendy if you can volunteer. Contact Cris in reference to the Walk Hampton Clean event.
