FULL COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES Hampton Clean City Commission April 11, 2023 ~ 3:30pm Board Members Present: Jackie Cannan, Chair; Tim Richardson, Vice Chair; Chris Grady; Gayle Mooney; April Receveur; Barbara Abraham; Ryan Adams; Grady McLean; Also Present: Linda Boone; Jim Williams; Dave McCauley (via Zoom); Wendy Iles; Cris Ausink; Courtney Worrall Absent: Councilman Chris Bowman; C’Faison Harris; Alex Maness Opening Business Welcome and Time Sheet: Chair Jackie Cannan called meeting to order, welcomed everyone and reminded all to sign in. Roll Call, Protocol, and Approval of Notes/Minutes: Protocol was read. Roll was conducted and a quorum was present. Barbara made a motion to accept the February minutes as written, Gayle seconded and all approved. Hampton City Council: No update 1 Hampton City Attorney: No update Hampton Parks, Recreation, & Leisure Services: Dave send a big thank you to the HCCC staff and Clean and Green Committee members for a wonderful VA Peninsula Clean Business Forum Breakfast on March 29. The work at Mill Point Park is finished and looking forward to the Mosaic Festival on April 22 from 10a-5p. Hampton Public Works: No update Financial Overview: Members reviewed the financial statement. Proposals, Discussion, Voting Items & Updates Committee & Partner Updates Beautification/YARDS: There are no yards to judge yet. Two yards were nominated, but no reply has been received from those nominees. Everyone is encouraged to nominate a Hampton yard for judging. Bee City USA-Hampton: They had a meeting in March and they will have a booth at Creation Care Day on April 16. They are working on having a plant sale and education table at the Buckroe Farmers Market on June 17. The Hampton Clean City Commission works to improve and enhance the physical environment of Hampton through beautification, solid waste management education, coastal awareness activities, and litter abatement programs; educates citizens; and encourages their participation. As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., we share the philosophy that each of us has a responsibility for enhancing our community environment. 202205-10 Clean & Green Workplaces: They didn’t have a meeting in March, but had 33 people at the VA Peninsula Clean Business Forum Breakfast on March 29. Peninsula Hydroponics was the 1 st Quarter winner and Vice Mayor Gray, Councilwoman Mugler, Councilman Bowman, Councilman Brown and Dave McCauley were able to attend. Chris Simmonds was the speaker for the event. The event went very well. Community Gardens: The Buckroe and Phoebus Community Gardens are full, but there are opening at the North Phoebus Community Garden. Hampton Waterways Restoration Project: They have completed their webpage updates and they need to be reviewed for approval to post the updates. They have purchased some sign stands to use at events they participate in to display educational information. They have a cleanup on June 3. They have a meeting on May 10 at Fort Monroe and that will be a cleanup. Litter & Recycling Awareness: They have a person donating thousands of cards for their Greeting Card distribution to our local nursing home residents. They did a cleanup near Fire Station #9 on April 1. There are 42 sites signed up for the Walk Hampton Clean event. They will be working to encourage businesses to help keep the area in front of their business clean. School Pride in Action: Hampton High School started a campus cleanup challenge on April 10-30 to see which school can clean up the most at their school. Next meeting on April 13, 2023 at 4:15pm. There is an Environmental Art exhibit starting on April 22 at Bluebird Gap Farm. The art show is a juried exhibit. They are looking for prizes for the winners that are appropriate for school children. 2 VA Cooperative Extension: No update Hampton VCE Master Gardeners: They will have a plant sale on May 6 at Bluebird Gap Farm starting at 9am. VA Peninsula Master Naturalists: They are half way through the Tree Steward class. There are 10 bluebird boxes at Bluebird Gap Farm. The bees are doing well out at Bluebird. The trails at Bluebird are doing well. Vernal pond number two at Bluebird if full of life and they are planning a Frog Watch soon. Trash Bash—the Hampton students placed second and will move on to compete in the district level. Staff Reports: Cris has a Rain Barrel Workshop on April 15 and that class is full. Cris is doing a Tour de Trash on Friday, April 14 and there are still a few spaces available. Wendy shared that Creation Care Day is on April 15 from 10a-2p. Wendy is making cardboard cars for the Mosaic Festival for a short 4-minute environmental film for the children.
