As an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful Inc., we share the philosophy that each of us has a responsibility for enhancing our community environment. BEE CITY USA – Hampton MEETING MINUTES May 18, 2023 Meeting was called to order at 2:32 pm by Barbara Abraham on May 18, 2023. Present were Barbara Abraham, Al Banwell, Juanita Greenwood, Wendy Iles, Gayle Mooney, and Marie Whitesell. Voting members Abraham, Banwell, and Mooney constituted a quorum. Barbara Abraham opened by announcing that she would be stepping down as committee chair at the end of the year but would be willing to continue as committee secretary to record minutes. She also announced the departures of George Curran and April Receveur would create two voting vacancies on the committee. Wendy Iles asked if it was proper to post the two pending committee vacancies on social media. The consensus was that it was permissible. Both Juanita Greenwood and Marie Whitesell stated that they would be available to fill those positions. Gayle Mooney made a motion to submit Greenwood and Whitesell to the Hampton Clean City Commission board for ratification. Motion was seconded by Al Banwell and approved by the voting members present. Minutes from the April meeting were reviewed. Motion was made by Gayle Mooney to accept and seconded by Barbara Abraham. Motion was approved by voting members present. Bee City will have a booth at the Buckroe Beach Farmers’ Market on June 10, 2023. Juanita Greenwood, Gayle Mooney, Marie Whitesell, Wendy Iles, and Barbara Abraham will participate. Plants will be available for a donation. The potential development of a pollinator garden on the property at 8110 Orcutt Avenue was presented. This is a city owned parcel south of West Mercury Boulevard. After discussion, the committee declined to take any action. Barbara Abraham announced that she has confirmed with Gaylynn Callahan, Hampton Extension Agent, to do a five-part webinar series on “Good Garden Bugs”. Barbara Abraham advised she had been notified that “Celebrating Pollinator Days” will be held at Blue Bird Gap Farm on Monday, June 19, 2023, 10am to 12 noon. The event will be to raise awareness of native plants/pollinators and have a native bee display. Discussion raised issue of whether this notification was a request for participation as Bee City or general event announcement. Barbara advised she would seek further clarification. Wendy Iles stated that the Hampton Clean City Commission had awarded Bee City Hampton $200 for anything related to committee activities. These funds needed to be spent by June 30, 2023. During discussion, Juanita Greenwood suggested aprons for members to wear during activities. Al Banwell made a motion to use the funds to purchase aprons for Bee City activities. Gayle Mooney seconded and the motion was approved by all voting members present. Motion to adjourn was made by Al Banwell and seconded by Gayle Mooney. Meeting was adjourned at 3:35 pm by acclamation.
