HAMPTON COMMISSION ON THE ARTS MEETING MINUTES
April 6, 2017
Attending

Absent: Jackie Merritt, Gail Rehmert
Called to Order
Chair, Nancy Eason called the meeting to order @ 4:05 pm.
Reading/Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the November Meeting were approved with unanimous consent.
Chair Report
Ms. Eason thanked the Hampton History Museum for hosting and introducing the Commission to the Hampton
History Museum. She gave an update to the Arts Education School Grants. Asbury School visitation was attended
by Mr. Dees and Ms. Eason. The children were engaged in the project. The projects will stay at Asbury and then go
home with the students as they graduate from the school. Jones School has two murals going up and the faculty and
staff is very impressed with results thus far. Hampton High has reported that they have visited both the Fly Dance
Company performance, the Hampton Roads Philharmonic and The Jones Family Singers thus far. Students have
interacted with the artists and continue to be eager to expanding their theatre going experiences. Thus far all
schools have expressed gratitude and success with their ongoing projects. Mr. Parison discussed the possibility of
working the Hampton Arts Foundation to integrate local professional artists into this school project next year. Mr.
Parison will discuss with his staff and with the Foundation.
Hampton Arts Report
Artistic Director, Richard Parison, gave the report of artistic activities from The American Theatre and The Charles H.
Taylor Arts Center.
Hampton History Museum
The Commission welcomed staff members of the Hampton History Museum to the meeting. They advised the
Commission of what the work of the Museum has been over the last few months and advised of upcoming projects.
They passed out fliers and information. They proceeded to take the Commission members on a tour of the
Museum.
New Business
Ms. Fitzpatrick reminded members that Alison Alexander, from the Office of Creative Placemaking and she will give
next months’ workshop on placemaking. It will be hands on and discussion based. There was general excited
discussion about the HCA’s ability to be a conduit for ideas and concepts about this project back to City Council and
the City Manager’s office. Ms. Curtis notified that Commission that Mr. Head has moved out of Hampton and his
seat will be replaced by Council; we are fortunate that Mr. Head will stay active on arts and music ideas in the city.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting is Thursday May 4, 2017 at 4pm at CREATIVE YOUTH ARTS CENTER.
Adjourn
There being no further business before the Commission, Ms. Burke moved to adjourn, Mr. Allison seconded. The
meeting was unanimously adjourned at 5:00 PM.
