HAMPTON COMMISSION ON THE ARTS COMMITTEE Minutes Thursday, March 6, 2025, 4:00 PM The American Theatre 1. Call to Order a. Dr. Ward called the meeting to order at 4:04 PM. 2. Roll Call a. Present: Dr. Dianne Suber, Dr. Karen Ward, Alice Capehart, Bob Boester, Martha Mugler, Courtney Hampton, Tekey Wallace, Aiya Williams, Kwasi Obeng b. City Staff Present: Angelique Shenk, Jody Madaras, Kelsey Rozier, Terri Vander Vennet 3. Approval of Meeting Minutes a. A motion was made by Dr. Suber to approve the minutes from the February 6, 2025 meeting and seconded by Ms. Hampton. The motion passed. 4. Hampton Arts Update a. Mr. Madaras provided an update on the current and upcoming events at The American Theatre and Charles H. Taylor Visual Arts Center and announced that the new Production Manager, David Vandervliet, had joined the staff on Monday. Mr. Madaras relayed department positions still needing to be filled and asked Committee members to refer interested qualified candidates to the City of Hampton website to apply (www.hampton.gov/jobs) 5. Public Art Update a. Ms. Vander Vennet reported that the February meeting with City staff had to be rescheduled. Once the City staff have met, Ms. Vander Vennet will send the proposed process to the City Manager for review 6. Old Business a. Dr. Ward distributed the 1990 amended HCOA Resolution, with the request that committee members review prior to April’s meeting and be prepared to discuss.  7. New Business a. Dr. Suber initiated a discussion regarding future branding of the City of Hampton as a tourist destination. She recommends the HCOA adopt a strategic plan that builds an Arts identity in Hampton, by augmenting and maximizing artistic opportunities. b. Ms. Wallace moved to create a Strategic Planning Committee to develop a strategic plan to maximize the charges in section 5 Powers and Duties of the HCOA resolution. Ms. Capehart seconded and the motion passed. i. Volunteers for this Committee were: Ms. Wallace, Mr. Boester, Ms. Hampton, Ms. Mugler, Ms. Williams. Dr. Suber made herself available in an advisory capacity if needed. 8. Adjournment a. Ms. Mugler made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Ms. Wallace. Motion passed and the meeting ended at 4:58 PM.
