Hampton Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities Thursday, March 14, 2024 The meeting was called to order by the Chairperson at 3:00 PM. The minutes of the February 8, 2024 meeting were reviewed and with no corrections noted, were accepted as presented. The treasurer’s report was presented and accepted as read. City Manager’s Office Mr. Steven Bond reported that he would no longer attend this meeting. He has been appointed a new district judge. Mr. Mohammad reported that there were 4 new members appointed to the Mayor’s Committee. The final budget review will be May 1, 2024. The survey for input can be found on the website, Hampton.gov. Public hearings will be held on April 15, April 21, and May 1, 2024. The final City Council vote will be May 18, 2024. Parks and Recreation: There were 3 Gold Medals won at the February 24th and 25th event. The Mardi Gras event had 62 participants. Parks and Rec will hold a pajama party in the fall. They continue to bowl at Century Lanes. The special Olympics event yielded 7 Honorees. Spring Break Camp is $100/ week for members and $120/ week for non-members. Hampton City Schools: No Report Fire & Rescue Division: No Report Accessibility: The last Accessibility Guide was printed in 2016. Ellen Shackelford and Vivian Austin are visiting businesses to confirm that they are ADA compliant. A sign-up sheet is available for others who want to help with this project. Accessibility requirements can be found on www.ada.gov Section 224 of the 2010 ADA standards states the following: • 1-25 rooms require 1 accessible room • 26-50 rooms require 2 accessible rooms • 51-75 rooms require 3 accessible rooms • 76-100 rooms require 4 accessible rooms Education: No Report Legislation: No Report Newsletter: Submit articles to Mrs. Robin McCormick at 757-728-3276, and she will post them on Facebook. Transportation: No Report Old Business: Mr. Mohammad has the QR Code for the Special Education Resource Fair being held from 6:00–7:30 pm on April 9, 2024, at One Franklin Street in Hampton. The Mayor’s Committee will have a table. New Business: 4 new members. Letters have been sent out. A guest asked for information about resources for a couple in wheelchairs. They are active members of the Sun Wheelers basketball group in Ft. Monroe. The phone number to the Center for Independent Living, 757-827-0275 was given. The meeting was adjourned at 3:57pm.
