The public is invited to attend meetings and to observe the work and deliberations of the Neighborhood Commission. The public may also address the Neighborhood Commission during the agenda item “Items to be Presented by the Public” by signing up to speak. The sign-up sheet will be available to the public until the agenda item “Items to be Presented by the Public” is reached in the course of the meeting. Joe Griffith – Phabulous Phoebus Street Festival Pride Event on June 17th. E. Stephanie Afonja – grand opening and ribbon cutting celebrating Family Restoration’s new location on June 16th. Discussion Items & Updates A. Resource Review Committee Chair i. Whalan McDew proposed to serve as chair of the Resource Review Committee with Kathy Rogers as the vice chair. 1. Dr. Baldwin to follow-up to solidify chair appointments. B. Vacation Planning i. Executive director stressed the importance of meeting quorums and advanced notice of foreseen absences. C. The Neighborhood Commission Calendar Review i. Commissioners discussed the NC calendar through the remainder of the year. II. Strategic Projects Update A. Community Plan i. City working towards a completed draft strategic plan. ii. Goal to convene the steering group integration team by August 2023. B. Model Block and Rock the Block i. Program focus on the Fordham Neighborhood. 1. HNS hosted neighborhood cookout on June 3rd 2. Three “model” homes located on Smiley RD were acquired. 3. Staff working to convene Fordham residents to serve on a neighborhood advisory board. ii. Habitat for Humanity approved 10 applications under the Rock the Block program. iii. HNS staff partnering with Habitat for Humanity and City of Newport News to reprise the Joint Home Repair Blitz for late September. III. Committee Status Reports  A. Neighborhood Resource Review i. The committee reviewed three Community Connections grant applications. 1. Olde Hampton Community Association’s “Making a Splash in the Community” Block Party. 2. Riverdale Regional Civic Association’s application for “Riverdale Day.” 3. Rosalee Gardens Neighborhood Watch Association’s Back to School event. B. Neighborhood Development and Training Committee i. Neighborhood Commission Executive Summary to be finalized by August with review from commissioners in July. C. Nominating Committee i. Vacancies in Districts 2, 8, and 10 D. Phase two and three are still to be discussed. The Chair will begin contacting mentors to notify them of the program and their commitment to that role. Additional items of discussion included gifting new Commissioners with a Hampton “Swag Bag” and celebrating the Commissioner’s years of service in a more intentional way. III. The Neighborhood Commission’s involvement with Neighborhood Watch Groups, National Night Out, and/ or Crime Prevention Week in partnership with the Hampton Police Division was discussed at length. The Commissioners concluded this would be a meaningful partnership and will introduce their ideas to the full Commission at the next meeting. A recommendation to invite Hampton City Schools’ Superintendent to an upcoming meeting was included for October’s meeting. I. BACKGROUND STATEMENT: The Neighborhood Commission and Housing & Neighborhood staff have been invited to attend this year’s National Night Out event. The purpose of this event is to promote, recruit, and celebrate Neighborhood Watch Groups nationwide! Event Date: Tuesday, August 1 Event Time: 4-7PM Participant Set-Up: 1PM Location: Hampton Roads Convention Center, Exhibit Hall C By the end of this presentation, Neighborhood Commissioners will walk away with a greater understanding of the Neighborhood Watch Program, National Night Out event, and ways to get involved. NEXT STEPS: - Sign up to volunteer at this year’s National Night Out event. - Promote National Night Out within respective networks (flyers will be provided). - Introduce yourselves to your Neighborhood Watch leaders.
