Parks & Recreation Advisory Board Notes Wednesday, May 1, 2019 | 6:30 p.m. | 5th floor City Hall, Canty Conference Room Members Present: Dr. Norman Merrifield, Kathy Dermanis, and Shawn O’Keefe Members Absent: Tara Wilcox Staff: DeRocke Croom, Nicole Dennis, David McCauley, Alison Eubank Guest(s): Marquita Tyson Opening Business Welcome, Introductions and Call to Order – Shawn O’Keefe called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. which was followed by a round of attendee introductions Approval of February 6, 2019 and April 3, 2019 Minutes – Dr. Merrifield moved, Kathy Dermanis seconded and the minutes were approved as presented Director’s Update – Dave advised that, per the most recent City Council meeting, Shawn O’Keefe’s term was approved and Kathy Dermanis was added as a new member; there was discussion about the number of members being increased to seven or nine; Dave noted that the department is deploying Civic Rec which will enable staff to track program metrics and allows citizens to transact business on-line (i.e.: shelter rentals, etc.); City Council voted to proceed to the next step in the Aquatic Center development; Dave will present the department CIP program to City Council in July which will feature Buckroe Boardwalk improvements, and Parks Master Plan Events & Items of Interest Event Date Time Location Community Center Classes Mary 1-31 Varies Varies Hampton Clean City May 1-31 Varies Varies Commission Sandy Bottom Nature Park May 1-31 Varies Varies Mayor’s Bike Ride May 2 6:00pm City Hall Dockside Seafood Feast Graham & Rollins (Hampton History Museum May 4 6:00pm (Ticket Required) Fundraiser) Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services 22 Lincoln Street | Hampton, Virginia 23669 www.hampton.gov | P: (757) 727-6348  Words on Wheels May 5 1:00pm Sly Clyde Ciderworks (Bike Walk Hampton Event) Front Porch Music Series May 15 6:00pm Hampton History Museum 10:00am- Hampton Heritage Day May 18 Mill Point Park 6:00pm Tour de Fort (Bike Event) May 19 2:00pm Oozlefinch Craft Brewery New Business Programming – Nicole Dennis provided a packet of brochures created by the marketing team and features calendar events at each community center; the department has partnered with Virginia Peninsula Foodbank to provide hot meals at each community center’s after-school program; she reviewed the program proposal form implemented to ensure clarity of program providers expectations, goals, requirements, etc. that will be vetted by staff before being routed to the Advisory Board for review and approval; she recommended Board meetings be held at different centers and to include a meet and greet to build rapport with staff members being supported by the Board; Dave suggested also offering a tour like the one sponsored by PRLS for Langley AFB VIP’s to Sandy Bottom Nature Park, West Hampton Community Center, Blue Bird Gap Farm, Darling Stadium, YH Thomas Community Center, Hampton History Museum, Fort Monroe Community Center and Air Power Park with a lunch stop hosted by Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau, this would provide opportunities to highlight the many parks and recreation venues Hampton offers; there was discussion of advantages that could result from these ideas; DeRocke Croom advised football, basketball, soccer, baseball and tennis are very popular with Hampton youth, and field hockey and lacrosse have recently been gaining popularity; PRLS provides support to 11 athletic football and baseball associations that serve youths aged 6-14 in five divisions, as well as adult basketball and softball, beach volleyball, youth cheerleading, youth fast-pitch softball and soccer programs; he gave a brief description of program benefits which resulted in a lengthy discussion Project Updates & Old/On-Going Business Maintenance & Capital Project Highlights: no updates were provided City Staff Updates: Alison noted May 1 begins National Bike Month with the following events planned: Mayor’s Bike Ride May 2, Words on Wheels May 5, Tour de Fort May 19; a contract will soon be awarded to GreenPlay for the Parks and Recreation Master Plan Board Member Updates: Shawn will obtain his certified pool operator’s license tomorrow Community Center Membership & Facility Feedback: Dave encouraged Board members to visit the community centers and provide feedback in the meetings Adjourn – there being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7:53 p.m. Next Meeting: June 5, 2019 @ 6:30 p.m. 5th floor City Hall, Canty Conference Room Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services 22 Lincoln Street | Hampton, Virginia 23669 www.hampton.gov | P: (757) 727-6348
