Hampton Senior Citizen Advisory Committee September 11, 2017 Hampton Senior Center Members Present: Sarah Drew, Doris Farmer, Yvonne Gaynor, George Gwynn, Jr.,Martha Clark, Christine Evans, Ingrid Kirschmann, Peggy Marshburn, Martha Johnson, Agency Representatives: Wanda Rogers, Barbara Stewart, Linda Burke, Hampton Dept. of Social Services, Gina Lewis, Foster Grandparent Program, S. Burton, B. Davis, G. Day, V. Norris G. Lewis opened the meeting, welcomed guests and read the minutes. A motion by was made by G. Gwynn and second by Y. Gaynor to accept the minutes as read. . L. Fitzpatrick introduced Christine Ausink, Project Assistant with Hampton Clean City Commission. Ms. Ausnik provided information regarding the following programs administered through the Clean City Commission: Pets for A Clean and Greener Hampton Keep America Beautiful Litter Index Clean and Green Business Committee School Pride in Action Pet Waste stations Tour de Trash. Water Monitoring Tree Maintenance Community Beautification and Yard of the Month program International Coastal Cleanup Clean the Bay Day Tree tours Adopt a Spot Hampton Waterways Walk Hampton Clean Week Rainbarrel workshops L. Fitzpatrick introduced Marybrook Burchfield, a Neighborhood Development Associate with the Housing and Neighborhood Services Division of the Hampton Community Development Department.Ms. Burchfield provided information regarding the fall Home Repair Blitz. During the fall and spring each year, the Neighborhood Development Commission in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, identifies a community that receives minor home repair, such as yard maintenance, outdoor painting, wheelchair ramps and power washing of exteriors. Hampton neighborhoods can express an interest with the department for consideration to be targeted for the Blitz. Volunteers are needed to not only assist with repairs but also for registration and to distribute resource fliers. Page 1 of 2 Hampton Senior Citizen Advisory Committee September 11, 2017 Hampton Senior Center Y. Gaynor presented the marketing materials and application for the Senior Citizenship Award. Copies will be made and distributed to all of the community centers in Hampton as well as the Department of Social Services, senior living communities and other civic organizations. She noted that there will be one award for each age group represented (70s, 80s and 90s) and that the subcommittee will review the applications and make a recommendation to the general committee for awards. G. Gwynn, Jr., inquired about persons nominated post-humously. The committee voted to nominate only living seniors. It was agreed that each committee member would review nomination documents within 24 hours and make any suggestions for edits to G. Jones. Members also agreed to each make at least one nomination. Committee members, D. Farmer and S. Drew will host a table for SCAC at the Senior Safety Summit in October. Citizen R. Gabriel volunteered to serve at the table. S. Drew requested that members hosting the table would be mindful to let visitors take as much as they want of SCAC giveaways. Concern was expressed that more seniors are not coming out to meetings. G. Lewis noted that announcements are sent to senior living communities. B. Stewart will provide an update on any names submitted to the City for membership in SCAC.
