Hampton Senior Citizens Advisory Committee Hampton Senior Center, 3501 Kecoughtan Road October 7, 2024 Call to Order and Welcome Chair Linda Kindred opened the meeting by welcoming all in attendance and reminded all that the attendance sheet at the back of the room was to be signed upon arrival. She added that if anyone needed to be absent from future meetings to contact her directly at 757-776-2286. She noted that if anyone had questions, to ask them at the end of the meeting. Opening prayer was then offered. Roll Call & Approval of September Minutes Present: Linda H Kindred-Chair, Lewis Dawley III- Vice Chair, Tonya L. Grant, Cassandra Alston- Townsley, Jamie Chapman, Lynda Burke, Martha L. Clark, James Goodbody, Camilla Doctor, Phyllis Porter, Remi Travis Wright, Absent: Lynda Burke City/Lead Agency Reps: Mayor Tuck, Councilman Bowman, Airris Madden (HPRLS), Susan Elswick (HPRLS), Shantel Hudgins (HPRLS), Korey Page (HPRLS) Bill Massey (PAA), LaNetta Davis (PAA), Ethel Hayward (Hampton Human Services), Tara Morgan (Hampton Voter Registrar’s Office) Guests: Nancy Glenn, G. Scott, Sharyn Lustre Shantel Hudgins conducted the roll call; a quorum was present. The opportunity was given to the advisory board to review the September minutes. A motion to accept the September minutes as written was made, seconded, and unanimously approved. Opening Remarks Airris Madden gave some opening remarks and proceeded to discuss informative updates on special current and future events that are to occur in the city in the coming weeks/months.  Blue Bird Gap Farm Fall Festival scheduled for October 26th and October 27th.  Christmas holiday events are scheduled to occur in December to include the Wonder Walk, Parade, and much more. 1   Darling Stadium renovations have been completed to include the upgrades to the track and turf field.  Senior Center Improvements have been considered where a survey was completed to develop plans for improvements of the Hampton Senior Center. Presentation- Tara Morgan (Hampton Voter Registrar’s Office) Linda Kindred introduced the presentation speaker, Tara Morgan, from the Hampton Voter Registrar’s Office. Tara thanked everyone for inviting her to speak at the meeting. She shared that she will give a brief overview for the upcoming November election in terms of preparation for voting. She shared that the ballot is two-sided to bring attention to voters to complete both sides of the ballot. This year’s ballot will also include candidates for Hampton City Council as well as candidates for Hampton School Board. Voters can vote up to three Hampton City Council candidates and vote up to four Hampton School Board candidates. There is also a constitutional amendment on the ballot. Early voting began on September 20th and goes through November 2nd on Monday-Friday from 8:30am- 5pm. October 15th is the last day to register to vote. Same day voter registration is available; however, it will be a provisional ballot. Tara opened the floor for questions. Linda thanked Tara for an informative presentation. Presentation- Bill Massey (Peninsula Agency on Aging) Linda Kindred introduced the presentation speaker, Bill Massey, from Peninsula Agency on Aging. Bill thanked everyone for inviting him to speak at the meeting. He shared his gratitude and appreciation for those that attended the 50th celebration of PAA where he was also celebrated for his 40 years of service and dedication with PAA. PAA was funded in 1974 as a local non-profit. It is dedicated to enhancing the well-being and livability of the community by empowering older adults to age gracefully in their home of choice. PAA delivers a range of programs and services designed to nurture and sustain independence. PAA offers services within Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, Poquoson, James City County, and York County. Some of the programs and services that are offered through PAA include the following: • Adult Day Care • Care Coordination • Caregiver Support • Congregate Dining Centers • Elder Abuse Prevention Program • Energy & Emergency Assistance • Home Delivered Meals • Information and Assistance 2  • In Home Personal Care Services • Non-Emergency Medical Transportation • Veteran Directed Care • VICAP Insurance Counseling The following statistics were provided in reference to Fiscal Year 2023. • 8,379Number of older adults served • 11,736Hours of Adult Day Care provided • 9,158Personal Care hours provided • 15,082Transportation team provided one-way trips • 949 Clients • 935 Volunteers (26,928 hours) • 20Caregiver Programs • Delivered 181,595 meals to 1,183 older adults on the Peninsula PAA offers their services to all regardless of income. Volunteers are a huge part of PAA where volunteer opportunities are available through Meals on Wheels, MedTran, and Caring Neighbors Programs. Linda thanked Bill for a very informative presentation. Subcommittee Reports Mayor’s Town Hall Lewis shared the following information: • It was confirmed that Mayor’s Town Hall is scheduled for November 4th at 11am. • Subcommittee will meet on October 7th to prepare for the upcoming Mayor’s Town Hall on November 4th. Challenges Facing Seniors Jamie Chapman and shared the following information: • They followed up with their interaction with Mike Monteith who is the CEO of Peninsula Community Foundation. The organization has been working on a report regarding demographic from local cities and counties. Senior Awards: Linda Kindred shared the following information: • The applications for the Senior Awards are due on November 1st. • The Awards Committee and Hospitality Committee will meet on November 11th to make arrangements for the Senior Award Event on December 2nd. 3  Public Comment Linda gave an opportunity for visitors/guests to speak. Councilman Bowman shared that there will be a Council Meeting on October 9th at 6:30pm in the Council Chamber. Adjournment Linda closed the meeting. The meeting adjourned at 11:05am.
