Town and Gown Committee Meeting
Tuesday, June 12, 2018

MINUTES
I. Call to Order – Chair Raymond Tripp called the meeting to order at 12:10 pm.
II. Roll Call – Roll was called with the following attendees:
Ann Bane, Mary Fugere, Evelyn Graham, Kellie Goral, Tracy Hanger, Tommy Hunnicutt, Steven
Lynch, James “Pete” Peterson, Pamela Richardson, Chad Smith, Raymond Tripp, Mayor Donnie
Tuck, Toni Williams, Novelle Dickenson, and Brenda Bailey (recorder)
Guests: Selene Guerrero, Robin McCormick, and Darren Robinson
III. Approve May 8, 2018 Meeting Minutes – Tommy moved to approve the minutes as presented,
Novelle seconded and the motion was passed unanimously.
IV. Nominating Committee Update – Mary advised that while the committee has not had an
opportunity to meet, they will bring nominee names forward at the July meeting; Mary and
Raymond will meet prior to the July meeting to discuss current by-laws and potential nominees.
V. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update
Communication/Community Education – Mary distributed the June 5th meeting
minutes and reviewed the discussion topics. Kellie stated one correction in the subcommittee
meeting minutes is necessary: “HCS Connect” should read “HCS Connects”. Tracy mentioned
that recent Dominion Energy commercials address the retention of local workforce; Toni
stated results from a new study were announced on WTKR/WTEV where Newport News was
ranked 6th, Norfolk was ranked 9th and Virginia Beach was ranked 10th.
VI. Key Updates Since the May 8, 2018 Town & Gown Committee Meeting
Steve announced the Speakeasy Escape Room (1920’s themed) is now open at 26 W Queens
Way; Ooozlefinch Craft Brewery won gold in American wild ales category of the Virginia Beer
Cup and Bull Island Brewing Co took gold in the pale bitter European beer category; Economic
Development participated with a sponsorship in a one-on-one event with US Navy decision-
makers and six local businesses, the event was held in Virginia Beach and Steve plans to work
towards having future events held in Hampton; Jersey Mike’s will be opening this fall at 2101
Coliseum Drive in Coliseum Crossing Shopping Center; Eye to Eye Optical opened at 1 Coliseum
Drive in Coliseum Crossing Shopping Center; leasing of smaller spaces in Downtown has been on
the increase; the agreement between the City of Hampton and WVS/Saunders + Crouse for
development in downtown Hampton has been approved and will be finalized at the June 13th
Council meeting; the VA Tech AREC project is progressing with grant approval from Virginia
General Assembly, no dollar amount has been determined
Selene advised she is seeking participants for Round Robin sessions; forward all event
announcements to Marketing Inc. and they will be added to the city calendar
Chad announced the collaboration between Hampton City Schools (HCS) and Thomas Nelson
Community College (TNCC) for the 3rd Annual Hampton City Schools Run for the Stage 5K was a
success with 194 registered entrants; Robert “Robbie” Edwards was selected as a first team
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III All-Region 10 catcher for the
second year, the Kecoughtan High School graduate has been accepted to Radford University,
Norfolk State University, Virginia Wesleyan, Liberty University and Virginia Commonwealth
University; Chad met with Brooks Hierstein of Hampton Convention and Visitor Bureau to
coordinate future NJCAA games at War Memorial Stadium
Pamela stated the 3rd Annual Hampton University Hall of Fame on June 2nd at Crowne Plaza was
a successful and touching event; she reminded the committee of the September 29th City of
Hampton Day football game and will provide more details as the date approaches
Ann announced high school graduations are scheduled for June 14, 15 and 16; she thanked
TNCC for their support and participation in Run for the Stage
Robin encouraged everyone to see City events and updates on hampton.gov
Kellie acknowledged the full page Daily Press article highlighting dual enrollment programs
offered at Hampton City Schools high schools, two students are graduating with their high
school and Associates degrees
Toni advised Partnership for a New Phoebus website phoebusva.com is now live
Mary reminded the group of the 9a-1p Buckroe Beach Farmers Market on Saturdays through
November; “Music by the Bay” scheduled on Fort Monroe on Thursdays at 7p; Peninsula Town
Center’s Summer Concert Series 6-9p every Tuesday through August 28; see
www.downtownhampton.com/calendar for summer nights live entertainment at the Hampton
waterfront; in partnership with Hampton Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services and Hampton
Convention & Visitor Bureau (HCVB) the “Scuttle Bus” will employ dedicated drivers; to alleviate
parking issues, a FREE shuttle bus is available which loops about every 25 minutes on Saturdays
from 11a-7p, Sundays from 11a-9p and July Fourth from 11a-7p between Jones Magnet Middle
School 1819 Nickerson Blvd to the end of Buckroe Avenue at the beach
Raymond advised $4.50 movies at Movie Bistro will end June 13; Peninsula Town Center Town
Square Imagination Play Day 10a-2p Thursdays from June 7-August 30; Avenue Blue features live
entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, see www.avenueblueva.com for the
entertainment schedule
Mayor Tuck presented City of Hampton Higher Education coins to Pete Peterson and Tracy
Hanger in honor of their pending retirements at the end of June and thanked them for their
many contributions and service to the City of Hampton
