Town and Gown Committee Meeting Tuesday, December 11, 2018 Lawson Conference Room, 8th Floor City Hall DRAFT MINUTES ATTENDEES: Ann Bane, Steve Bond, Novelle Dickenson, Mary Fugere, Kellie Goral, Tommy Hunnicutt, Rodenna Kirksey, Steven Lynch, Dr. Richard Mason, Robin McCormick, Darren Robinson, Mayor Donnie Tuck, Toni Williams, Raymond Tripp, and Brenda Bailey Guest(s): Master Police Officer Dan Mackey, Hampton Police Department I. Call to Order – Chair Tripp called the meeting to order at 12:13pm II. Roll Call III. Approve November 15, 2018 Meeting Minutes – Chair Tripp called for a motion to approve the minutes, Tommy moved and Novelle seconded, the minutes were unanimously approved as presented IV. Nominating Committee Update – Mary stated she has reached out to Lakesha Renfro Brown, Steve Mallon, Robert “Bob” McKenna, Mark Crump and Sgt. Nakia Peek with the following responses: Ms. Brown – no response Mr. Mallon – tentatively accepted Mr. McKenna – accepted, unable to attend today’s meeting Mr. Crump – no response Sgt. Peek – accepted, unable to attend today’s meeting MPO Mackey – accepted, in attendance at today’s meeting Lisa Wornom-Zahralddin – no longer employed at Peninsula Council for Workforce Development; Mary requested a recommendation from Executive Director Bill Mann V. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communication/Community Education – Mary distributed and summarized the December 4th meeting notes; Rodenna advised supervisors are open to displaying the Visitor Guide in the Student Services Building at Thomas Nelson Community College; she wasn’t able to reach the SDV100 contact; Kellie provided an explanation of peachjar.com flyer distribution Economic Development/Student Retention – Steve advised the subcommittee is progressing in their efforts to engage Hampton University student and a Student Government question & answer session has been scheduled for 4p on January 16, Darren noted the Hampton Youth Commission has gathered some of the same information and suggested Steve reach out to Tolu Ibikunle; Steve has scheduled a standing meeting for this subcommittee  VI. Key Updates Since the November 15, 2018 Town & Gown Committee Meeting Ann mentioned that the schedules have been published for each schools’ holiday programming Toni noted attendees of the Holiday Illumination filled the blocked off street; she shared that Partnership for a New Phoebus has formed the following subcommittees: -Business Enhancement Committee – to evaluate opportunities to support Phoebus businesses -Residence Enhancement Committee – to evaluate opportunities to support Phoebus residences Rodenna advised Thomas Nelson Community College will be on winter break December 20- January 2; the 50th annual commencement will be held in May 2019 Robin stated Round Robin recently featured the award-winning Thomas Nelson Community College ballroom dance with guests Pam Roberts, TNCC Co-Advisor, and student club President Faizon Alexander discussing the program’s national honors Mayor Tuck wished the committee members a happy, safe and joyous holiday season Steve B. wished the committee a happy, safe holiday and reminded member to make sure to check-in on friends, family members and neighbors as this is sometimes a difficult season for some people Kellie encouraged everyone to check the Hampton City Schools website for all events taking place; she gave a shout out to Phoebus High School for a great game that was well-attended by alumni and students alike; she distributed a flyer (also available on www.hampton.k12.va.us) featuring Hampton City Schools impressive statistics including the highest accreditation rate in six years, highest on-time graduation rate since 2008, etc. ; 9th graders have been invited to Hampton Roads Convention Center on December 13th for career exploration day prior to making their academy selections; schools will close December 20 – January 2 Novelle stated final exams are being conducted this week at Hampton University and school will be closed December 20 – January 2 Steve L. announced the following openings: -Conn’s Home Place at 1082 W. Mercury Boulevard (Riverpointe Shopping Center) -Seafood Kitchen at 1814-G Todds Lane -Sweet Beans at 3355 Commander Shepard Boulevard -WorkOne Resource Center at 1300 Thomas Street (Y.H. Thomas Community Center) is open and with support from a variety of community partners will facilitate employment, staff is in the process of developing a schedule of partners hours and availability; staff are pursuing the potential of a full time administrative aide at the center; he advised that workforce development is a city, state, and federal-wide initiative and Hampton is ahead of the curve with the opening of this resource center Mary announced the Hampton Convention & Visitor Bureau will be unveiling a new website soon where the 2019 calendar of events will be available Raymond wished everyone happy holidays VII.
