Call to Order Chair Tripp called the meeting to order at 12:15pm and announced the passing of committee member Thomas N. (Tommy) Hunnicutt III on April 3, 2019. A sympathy card was circulated for members to sign. He also announced the passing of Robin McCormick’s father, Chris Setzler, on March 29. A sympathy card was circulated for members to sign. II. Approve March 12, 2019 Meeting Minutes Steve Lynch motioned to accept minutes with correction made to the spelling of his name, seconded by Mayor Tuck, amended by Kellie to make corrections she emailed prior to the meeting. The minutes were unanimously approved with corrections IV. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communication/Community Education – no updates available at this time Economic Development/Student Retention – Steve Lynch advised the subcommittee is creating a list of at least 50 internships available that will be available for the upcoming 2019- 2020 school year; the group is also investigating methods of communicating the information via Mail Chimp, TV47, etc. V. Key Updates Since the March 12, 2019 Town & Gown Committee Meeting Kellie advised Dr. Smith filmed his portion of Cheryl Tan’s (WVEC) Academies of Hampton five- part series on April 4, Mary Bunting will film her portion on April 15 to be followed by Veronica Hurd, in May and a Freshman Academy Principal and students in June; the series will be aired on Hampton City Schools YouTube channel Ann announced that high school commencement ceremonies will be held at the Hampton Coliseum as follows: June 13-Phoebus, June 14-Kecoughtan, June 15-Bethel and Hampton Eric stated classes will begin May 1; a new initiative called Gayle’s Closet was launched last month in honor of Gayle Cheeks-Harrell. Donations of men’s and women’s professional clothing will help students and local residents obtain professional clothing for interviews, career fairs and work attire Darren announced Hampton 101 originally scheduled for May 8 will be rescheduled sometime in July  Bill advised of several large projects at Hampton University (HU): partnering with Jefferson Labs, Veterans Administration, Proton Therapy Institute and National Institute of Health (NIH) in order to create a business climate with local biomedical cohorts offering attractive employment opportunities for graduating students; HU will host the 2019 annual NIH conference October 28-30 Steve M. mentioned the following events: Downtown Hampton Kiwanis FUN HUNT 11a-3p Saturday, April 13 at Hampton History Museum; block parties will begin May 4th; staff continues to implement green, clean & safe initiatives to activate the Downtown area Toni announced Honey House Boutique is now open at 9 E Mellen Street; Phoebus Spring Fling 10a-6p Saturday, April 27 will feature the Planters Mr. Peanut nut mobile and craft brewer vendors increased from seven to twelve this year Rodenna reminded the group of the following events: Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet April 5-14 with performances at 8p on Friday and Saturday, 3p on Sunday; Spring Job Fair 9a-3p Tuesday, April 16; Intelligent Lives Screening & Community Conversation 545p reception and 630p screening; Class of 2019 commencement 7-9p Thursday, May 9 Novelle announced HU commencement will take place on May 11 and summer school will begin May 28 with three sessions, two 4-week sessions and one 6-week session; he also thanked Mayor Tuck for his recent presentation to Novelle’s Public Administration class Bob advised the Spotlight on the Peninsula-Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute will take place 2-5p Friday, April 26 at 40 Enterprise Parkway with a goal of at least 150 attendees; Virginia Peninsula Executive Leadership Program is scheduled for 730-9a Tuesday, April 30 at Peninsula Workforce Development Center 600 Butler Farm Road and will feature keynote speaker John R. Lawson, Executive Chairman of W.M. Jordan; United Way is partnering with Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce in Emerging Leaders Society offering tours of local businesses to senior classes of Christopher Newport University, William & Mary and Hampton University, the next tour will be at Canon Mayor Tuck noted the FY20 budget will be released April 15 and approved at the April 23 City Council meeting with an increase to the Solid Waste fees due to decreased usage at the NASA Steam Plant; Town Hall meeting live on Facebook May 8; 2019 Seniors Revival at Empowered Believers Christian Learning Center 11a-1p April 24-26 at 2096 Nickerson Boulevard; he is seeking male mentors to lead 100 6th grade boys through a Virginia Unity project with a two year commitment; Steve L. announced openings at Mezeh Mediterranean Grill (3961 Kilgore Avenue); CBD Venue (4401 Kilgore Avenue); T-mania (2307 McMennamin Street, Suite H117); Honey House Boutique (9 E Mellen Street); Hyatt Place Hampton Convention Center (1905 Coliseum Drive) ribbon cutting is scheduled for 4-7p Tuesday, April 23; Hampton CEC Job Fair will be held 10a-1p Wednesday, April 25 at Hampton Community Employment Center (CEC) 1911 Saville Row; Economic Development Business Appreciation Golf Tourney is scheduled for 730a Thursday, May 16 at the Hamptons Golf Course Pamela noted there were more than 3,500 attendees at Hampton University High School Day on April 5; there are still tickets available for remaining softball games; Hampton Day of Giving will take place Friday, April 12, more information is available at www.onehamptonu.com; the annual Student Support Services End of Year Banquet will be held 3-7p Sunday, April 14 in the Convocation Center; 13th Annual Easter by-the-bay EGGstravaganza for children 10 and younger is scheduled for 12-3p at 30 Strawberry Banks Boulevard on Saturday, April 20; Jermaine advised the annual Golf Tourney will take place May 31; the Hall of Fame Gala is scheduled for June 1 at Hampton Marina; the new Hampton University football schedule will be out soon Raymond announced the Peninsula’s premier food tasting event and Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s largest fundraiser of the year, Tastefully Yours, will be held 6-930p Thursday, April  11 at Hampton Roads Convention Center; Coliseum Central Business Improvement District is hosting a “Walk Hampton Clean” event from 3-5p on Wednesday, April 24 at Hyatt Place 1905 Coliseum Drive; the Big 3-Ring Royal Hanneford Circus will perform at the Hampton Coliseum April 26-28; Kroger gas station is now open at Riverpointe Shopping Center; Mekos Skate Park is now open and offering 15 minute devotionals and free skate time with equipment for rent Novelle suggested the Town & Gown Committee provide a small plaque honoring Tom Hunnicutt’s many years of service to this committee **Brenda will make the arrangements prior to the May meeting** VI.
