Approve October 8 , 2019 & November 12, 2019 Meeting Minute s – Chair Tripp advised the minutes were distributed via email; Novelle moved, Mary seconded to approve the minutes as presented and the motion passed unanimously III. Strategic Direction Subcommittees Goals & Objectives Update Communications/Community Engagement – Mary stated the subcommittee met on January 7 for which the notes are attached to today’s packet; Mary has been attempting to contact Ms. James at Hampton University; Mary advised she will be utilizing a messaging service to send messaging to students at Hampton University, Thomas Nelson Community College and Bryant & Stratton College vs. a dedicated visitor guide; she solicited specific messaging ideas from all three organizations that can be targeted to students; the Hampton Convention and Visitor Bureau (HCVB) internship position is on hold until the HCVB is fully staffed; Mary announced the new Director of Media & Community Relations is Yuri R. Milligan and the Media Relations Specialist opening has been posted IV. Key Updates Since the November 12 , 2019 Meeting Robin distributed city calendars to all members and advised more are available for the asking Bob announced Katherine A. Rowe, William & Mary President is scheduled to speak at the Peninsula Executive Leadership Forum 730a Tuesday, January 28, Barbara Hamm Lee will speak in April and Clayton Turner, NASA Langley Page 1 of 3 Director will speak in August; Spotlight on the Peninsula, a monthly series showcasing components of the economics growth engine on the Peninsula, will hold their February event at Liberty Source on Fort Monroe and the focus for the remainder of the year will be on STEM; the Chamber hosted a Peninsula STEM mapping session that brought together numerous organizations from the Peninsula that are engaged somehow in STEM (educational, workforce development , operations, and employment), this informal organization will come together on a somewhat regular basis to collaborate together and create new opportunities in STEM for the future of the Peninsula, anyone interested in being part of the group my contact Bob Eric noted that Bryant & Stratton classes begin tomorrow (1/15) and rapid registration continues through January 22; the sports season is currently in development; the highly anticipated e-sports arena opened recently and is gaining momentum on the Peninsula Richard noted the Hampton University Marching Band performed in the 2020 Rome, Italy New Year’s Day Parade Mary stated the 2020 visitor guide featuring the 50th Anniversary of Hampton Coliseum has been published; kudos to the sales team at HCVB for exceeding their 2019 sales goals Toni announced Noir: A Simply Panache Lounge opened at 221 E Mellen Street on November 30 and Charlottes Cafeteria will be opening in March Beth noted that classes at Thomas Nelson Community College started January 13; following Dr. Dever’s retirement last month, Dr. Gregory DeCinque was appointed interim president until the position can be filled; she thanked everyone for their support and donations to the successful pop-up closet event last month Steve M. advised Sit N Eat Restaurant at 5 E Queens Way is now open in the former Hampton Ice Cream Parlor location; Downtown special events calendar is in development; construction of the new apartments at Wine Street/Queens Way/Armistead Avenue will not impact the summer block party schedule; a St. Patrick’s Day event is being planned for March 14 featuring Bull Island Brewery; the Virginia Tech Seafood AREC is moving forward; Harbor Centre has more than 80K SF of office space available; Downtown Hampton Development Partnership (DHDP) has hired two new part time staff Darren announced the Mayor’s Town Hall Meeting 6p January 30 at Jones Middle School Novelle noted classes at Hampton University began January 9; the Marching Band has been invited to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in November 2020; HU will also be launching an e-sports program at a location to be determined; the annual Gala of Hope is being planned; and the aquatics team is planning a celebration event for their 150th anniversary in April Mayor Tuck noted the 2nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr and Hampton Heroes Memorial Plaza ceremony will take place 1p Monday, January 20 in the lobby of Hampton Roads Convention Center; National Park Service Superintendent Terry Brown will be leaving his post at Fort Monroe as he has been selected to lead a Page 2 of 3  national commission to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our country’s founding in 2026 Naima will send Black History Month events calendar Ann announced Dr. Smith has been selected as one of four candidates for Superintendent of the Year; the announcement of the winner will be made February 13 between 7-9pm Raymond noted the next Sentara Careplex Business Roundtable meeting will be held 8-9am January 15 featuring Ellen Williams and will focus on employee burnout; SkyZone is now open at Peninsula Town Center; Kroger will hold a grand opening on January 22 and will be closing the Coliseum Drive location; Axis Apartments are still under construction and expected to open in late spring, early summer V.
