TOWN-VILLAGE AIRCRAFT SAFETY & NOISE ABATEMENT COMMITTEE One Washington Street, Hempstead, New York 11550 (516) 489-5000 x3296 – TVASNAC@tohmail.org Meeting Minutes Monday, August 24, 2020 Town of Hempstead Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion In Attendance (virtually) Carl Baessler, Village of Atlantic Beach Andrew Weiss, Village of Floral Park Larry Quinn, Village of Garden City Sean Wright, Village of Valley Stream James Vilardi – Executive Director Executive Director James Vilardi welcomed the four committee members in attendance. Since only four members were present, we did not have a quorum and a formal meeting was not held. Mr. Vilardi and the committee members had an informal discussion on current practices used by the FAA with respect to flight patterns, flight data and “Slide Slope vs. Stepping” as well as airplane noise levels and visiting Tracon in Westbury. All agreed that prepping for the September Roundtable meeting is important. Andrew Weiss suggested proposing a (local) student intern project through Congressman Suozzi’s and/or Congresswoman Rice’s office to compare flight patterns versus wind direction over a three to six month period to ascertain how often the FAA chooses flight patterns based on wind direction.  Mr. Vilardi and the other committee members think this was a great idea.  Sean Wright suggested looking at London Heathrow Airport and how they handle noise since that airport is similarly located in an urban/suburban area as is JFK and LAG. Three achievable goals were discussed:  Talking to Justin in Congressman Suozzi’s office to see if the June 2019 “handshake deal” the Congressman made with the FAA can be rekindled. At the Roundtable meeting in September, let the FAA/PA know the TVASNAC Committee is requesting: 1  Fanning out arrivals between different communities, so 90% of arrivals are not going to any one community.  Planes should utilize “Glide Slope vs Stepping-In” method as much as possible (if not using the engine during landing, noise will be greatly reduced) Mr. Vilardi thanked the committee members for attending this evening. Prepared by: Carol Renta Secretary, TVASNAC 2
