CITY OF HENDERSON SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMISSION MINUTES October 15, 2014 I. CALL TO ORDER Chairman Dan Hyde called the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Meeting to order at 5:30 p.m., at 240 Water Street, Henderson City Hall, in the Council Chambers Conference Room. II. CONFIRMATION OF POSTING AND ROLL CALL Joanne Wershba, Administrative Assistant III, confirmed the meeting had been posted in accordance with the Open Meeting Law by posting the agenda three working days prior to the meeting at City Hall, Multigenerational Center, Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, and Fire Station No. 86. PUBLIC COMMENT Brianna Boess, Clear Counsel Law Group, announced the launch of Free Will Friday will be kicked off at the Henderson Community Expo at the Galleria Mall on Saturday, October 18, 2014. She noted that anyone who attends will be eligible for a free will. David Karel, David Karel Group, shared with the Commission the results of several Medicare workshops that were held in Sun City Anthem and Sun City MacDonald Ranch. IV. ACCEPTANCE OF THE AGENDA (Motion) Mr. Ruliffson introduced a motion to accept the agenda as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. V. NEW BUSINESS 1 MINUTES SEPTEMBER 17, 2014 PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Adopt the September 17, 2014, Senior Citizens Advisory Commission minutes. (Motion) Ms. McEvers introduced a motion to adopt the minutes of September 17, 2014, as presented. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. 2 RECOGNITION OF EDWARD "HARVEY" McLENDON PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Senior Advisory Commission desires to publically acknowledge their appreciation to Edward "Harvey" McLendon for his support of the bread program. Chairman Hyde recognized Edward “Harvy” McLendon, presented him with a certificate of appreciation, and thanked him for his service to the bread program. 3 SUCCESSFUL AGING EXPO PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission will discuss collaboration with the organizers of the Successful Aging Expo, to be held on January 31, 2015. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 3 October 15, 2014 – Minutes Chairman Hyde noted that Melissa McCabe requested that the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission recommend speakers on the following topics: Living Alone, Auditing Medical Bills, Burglary Prevention, Elder Abuse; Medications Made Easy, Current Scams, and Diabetes Facts. A discussion ensued regarding sources for the above topics. Ms. McEvers will obtain contact information on past speakers. 4 HENDERSON SENIORS' AUXILIARY PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION A member of the Henderson Seniors' Auxiliary will give a report for September. Marianne Stanger, Henderson Seniors Auxiliary, gave an update on the Henderson Seniors’ Auxiliary. Areas of discussion included: Yard Sale, Harvest Festival Results, Henderson Community Expo, Boutique, Christmas Craft Sale, New Homebound Library Program, and Pet Adoptions. 5 INFORMATIONAL SENIOR ISSUES PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Commission members to discuss and approve subjects for articles from the "Senior Newswire" that would be included in the weekly report at Heritage Park Senior Facility. Nechole Garcia, Assistant City Attorney I, informed the Commission that they may select articles as long as they include proper citations for their sources. Ms. Baldizan distributed some sample articles to show proper length and categories needed. (Motion) Ms. Baldizan introduced a motion to approve an article regarding medical bills for the Heritage Park Senior Facility newsletter and authorize staff to paraphrase and edit as needed. The vote favoring approval was unanimous. Chairman Hyde declared the motion carried. 6 UPDATE ON UNITED RIDERS TRANSPORATION PROGRAM PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Fran Smith will give an update on the new transportation program at Heritage Park Senior Facility. Senior Citizens Advisory Commission Page 4 October 15, 2014 – Minutes Ms. Smith gave an update on the new transportation program and noted that approximately 2,000 rides have already been delivered. She stated the number of riders is three times what was anticipated and a third driver and van is being added. Responding to a question by Ms. McEvers regarding why City buses are note being utilized, Ms. Smith stated they are expensive and require drivers with commercial driver’s licenses. Ms. McEvers noted that she has received complaints regarding drivers arriving too early and not helping riders get in and out of the vehicle. Ms. Smith responded that she will look into these concerns. 7 STAFF REPORT PUBLIC WORKS PARKS AND RECREATION Recreation Services Manager, Corey Clark, will give a staff report and an update on the City's Senior Services. Mr. Clark distributed and briefly summarized the Heritage Park Senior Facility September 2014 Report. He noted that the homebound library program was saved by the Henderson Senior Auxiliary and thanked them for their assistance. Mr. Clark also read a thank-you letter from the family member of a Meals on Wheels homebound customer. VII. CHAIRMAN/MEMBER COMMENTS Chairman Hyde commented on the following items: Chairman Hyde informed the Commissioners that he will be absent next month as he will be attending the Straight from the Heart annual fundraiser on November 19, 2014. He said he is being honored at the fundraiser; however, he shares this honor with the rest of the Commissioners. He recognized JoAnn McEvers for her 24 years of service to the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission. VIII. SET NEXT MEETING The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on November 19, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers Conference Room of City Hall. IX.
