CITY OF HENDERSONVILLE ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD City Hall – Council Chambers | 160 5th Ave. E. | Hendersonville NC 28792 Thursday, April 15, 2021 – 4:00 PM MINUTES 1. CALL TO ORDER A. Roll Call - Beth Stang, Chairwoman Gracie Erwin and Drew Finley also present PRESENT Chair Beth Stang Secretary Geri Conley Board Member Gray Jernigan Board Member Kim Bailey Board Member Neil Brown Staff Liason Mike Huffman ABSENT Councilmember Lyndsey Simpson Board Member Roger Bass 2. CONSIDERATION OF AGENDA New charter and procedures added to New Business Gray J. adding - His role and service to board under New member recruitment and terms Motion made by Board Member Brown, Seconded by Secretary Conley. Voting Yea: Chair Stang, Secretary Conley, Board Member Jernigan, Board Member Bailey, Board Member Brown AGENDA ITEMS 1. Adoption of ESB Minutes - Michael Huffman, Staff Liason Motion made to adopt minutes as recorded by Board Member Brown, Seconded by Secretary Conley. Voting Yea: Chair Stang, Secretary Conley, Board Member Jernigan, Board Member Bailey, Board Member Brown ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD – April 15, 2021 Page | 1 SUB-COMMITTEE UPDATES 2. City Council Update - Lyndsey Simpson, Councilwoman Lyndsey not present for update 3. Bee City Updates - Kim Bailey, Board Member Not technically a sub-committee yet Pollinator Trail information is posted on National Bee City webpage Travel Tourism may post as well Will Hutchinson GIS Tech is producing a Pollinator Trail Story Map on COH ArcGIS portal Species list is updated w/ corrections and link to suppliers Bee Mural Painting is back underway. 4/3 different groups presented information about pollinators at Mural Several more pollinator/mural events through May Request for volunteers for events - contact Kim directly Community Painting Day tentatively on May 1, Finishing on May 8th Ideas for organizing community painting day and sign-ups. Need volunteers for this event as well - May 1 Dedication ceremony at mural completion 4. Plastic Reduction and Recycling Updates - Geri Conley and Gray Jernigan, Board Members Gray J - Final packet of logos received on Tuesday 4/13 Press release is being finalized, need approval from Allison Program not highlighted in Earth Week Proclamation Would like to request a stand alone proclamation for plastic reduction Should have program ready soon (Toolkit, pledge, press release) 5. Sustainability Committee Update - Neil Brown & Lyndsey Simpson Neil B. - No updates, awaiting charter updates and legal clarification Planning Board DSI Committee - has had 2 meetings, developing an ordinance for City Council ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY BOARD – April 15, 2021 Page | 2 DISCUSSION ITEMS 6. Earth Week Events Update - Michael Huffman, Staff Liason Flyer presented Add link to proclamation Neil and his wife, Mike, maybe Beth, meet at Wendy's for clean-up 7. EAC Update - Neil Brown, Board Member Neil B. - 4/4 memo updates Green account - taking savings from energy initiatives to reinvest into other projects, potential $50000 seed fund from county 5/6 - Compost facility tour w/ Christine Wittmeier NEW BUSINESS 8. New member recruitment New member recruitment - Two new applications have been submitted Gray J.- advertising open positions via MT Gray resubmitted his application Considering if his position would be better served as a non-voting member, supporting role? Concerns about conflict w/ MT Recycling team meeting and open meeting requirements from City M. Huffman presented new Charters and Rules and will distribute to Board Members for review. Planning to vote in May 9. Sustainability Day at City Market - Beth Stang, Chairwoman ESB Asked to participate in City Market on 7/12. Will discuss further in June. 6/6 Pollinator Table (easy to work in rain barrels and compost).
