CITY OF HENDERSONVILLE TREE BOARD City Operations Center - Assembly Room | 305 Williams Street | Hendersonville, NC 28792 Monday, August 12, 2024 – 2:30 PM MINUTES MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: LYNDSEY SIMPSON, JANET THEW, MELODY CRAWFORD, NATALIE WILCOXEN, GLENN LANGE, AND REMOTELY SCOTT HARMON MEMBERS NOT IN ATTENDANCE: BECCA DOLL, MARY DAVIS 1. CALL TO ORDER 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A. Minutes June 18, 2024 Motion to Approve: Glenn Lange Second: Natalie Wilcoxen Motion Approved 4. NEW BUSINESS A. Public Relations Report - Mary Jo Padgett REPORT TO: Hendersonville Tree Board FROM: Mary Jo Padgett, PR Consultant RE: Publicity Report for August Board meeting DATE: August 12, 2024 Publicity/ events since last board meeting -- . Planning for August issue of newsletter Planning for Oct. guided walk Upcoming Calendar of Events – HENDERSONVILLE TREE BOARD CALENDAR 2024 Saturday, August 17, Maple Street Farmers Market. 8 a.m.-2 pm. -- ESB will have a booth at the Maple Street Farmer’s Market highlighting the symbolic monarch migration project of the Bee City USA- Hendersonville. Janet T and Glenn L will provide copies of the Tree Board brochure and the “landscape species list” and explain the importance of Keystone Plants. Saturday, October 5 – Farm-City Day. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Jackson Park. Possible tabling at this event? TREE BOARD – August 12, 2024 Page | 1 Sunday, October 13 – Explore Brooklyn Creek Restoration Project. 2 p.m. Meet at Sullivan Park pavilion in Green Meadows Community. Park along Martin Circle. (Rain date: Sun., Oct. 20, 2 p.m.) Mike Huffman, the City’s project manager for this extensive stream restoration project, will explain not only the project – which uncovered portions of the stream long forgotten – but also the relevance of the stream in the history of this community. A restored Bird Sanctuary, restoration of the natural meandering stream, streambank plantings, and upcoming community involvement will be discussed during this less-than-1/2-mile stroll. Fall -- NeighborWoods Tree Plantings – Natalie W, Mary D., Melody C. are developing this. There was discussion about Farm City and possibility of the Tree Board having a booth. Natalie and Glenn offered to assist/volunteer. A news letter will go out to the mailing list on late August. B. Sullivan Park Stream Restoration Project -Mike Huffman Mr. Huffman discussed the Brooklyn Creek stream restoration project and requested additional trees and possibly assistance with volunteers. C. Grant Discussion - Scott Harmon Discussed a grant the Mr. Harmon applied for a grant from the NC Forest Service for a Sample Tree Inventory. D. City Council Update - Lyndsey Simpson 5. OLD BUSINESS A. The Recommended Canopy Percentage and how it will affect Urban Forestry Plan - Lyndsey Simpson B. NeighborWoods - Natalie Wilcoxen Ms. Wilcoxen has been working on the NeighborWoods SOPs and systems, and forms and will send them out to the board for review in the coming weeks. C. ESB Request for Native Plants Policy Discussion Meetings should be scheduled with staff and a ESB member to discuss the strategy and direction for a policy. D. Tree Species List Glen Lange presented the new Tree Species list and the board voted to Rename and update the list. Motion To Approve the new list and name: Glenn Lange Second: Melody Crawford TREE BOARD – August 12, 2024 Page | 2 Motion was approved. Mark Stierwalt will forward the new “Approved Species List” to the clerk of court to post on the Tree Board’s web page. 6. OTHER BUSINESS Mark Stierwalt informed the board of an infraction where previously planted Tree Board trees were cut down on Hwy 64 East by a local business owner and the matter had been turned over to the legal department. 7. ADJOURNMENT Meeting was adjourned by Janet Thew at 4:28 pm.
